And ahead of the release of the big screen biopic, stars Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter feature in a new set of posters.

The film wrapped a year ago after a huge shoot around London, but finally the promo campaign is underway ahead of the movie's premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

One new poster shows Carey alone with the colours purple, white and green which were a key part of the Suffragette movement.

And new character posters show the talented trio in costume for their roles as leaders and foot soldiers of the women's right to vote fight in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Under the slogan 'Mothers. Daughters. Rebels' Carey and Helena are dressed in plain blazers with 'Votes for women' rosettes pinned to their lapels.

Meryl meanwhile is shown in a hat and lace-trimmed shirt for her role as Emmeline Pankhurst.

Another poster stars Carey, and features the colours purple, white and green which were a key part of the Suffragette movement, with purple signifying dignity, white showing purity and green meaning hope. The poster has been released to tie in with Emmeline Pankhurst Day.

One of the most prominent figures in the suffrage movement, Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903, a militant organisation dedicated to 'deeds not words.'

Carey's character Maud meanwhile is a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement led by Pankhurst.

Maud becomes a foot soldier for the cause alongside women from all walks of life, who are eventually forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State.

Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

Speaking to indirewire.com in May, Carey, 30, admitted working on the film filled completely reshaped her view of the suffragette movement.

'I had no idea they were beaten, imprisoned, blew up bridges, went on hunger strikes,' she said. 'We have a very muted picture of happy women with banners marching down the street.'

The Sarah Gavron directed feature made headlines last year as the first film ever given permission to film within London's Houses of Parliament.

Gavron told the BBC at the time: 'We are honoured to be allowed to recreate a crucial moment in that long journey towards equality by filming where the Suffragettes actually brought their protest over 100 years ago.' Filming took place just over a century after real demonstrations by Suffragettes in the Palace of Westminster.

The film will debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 7, before a nationwide UK release on October 30.
