'She's redefining the DadBod': Watch company trying cash in on Caitlyn Jenner's ESPY award gets it SO wrong!

  • Caitlyn, 65, was receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the event
  • Smartwatch specialist Pebble was criticised by other social media users
  • Apologised and left comment up in order to engage people in discussion

A watch company has been criticised after it insensitively claimed Caitlyn Jenner had redefined the 'dad bod' as she accepted an award for bravery.

Smartwatch specialist Pebble made the comment on Twitter during the ESPYs in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

The event saw the 65-year-old receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award after coming out as transgender earlier this year.

It wrote: 'Already a pro at being awesome? OK, now try it in heels. @caitlyn_jenner’s #ESPYs dress redefines the #DadBod.'

The tweet was met with widespread criticism, with many users calling the company out.

One user, Veronica Kahl Cary, wrote: 'A lot of us are saddened by a tweet which felt dismissive of our actual experiences.'

And Kayla Powell added: 'Very not cool. Rethinking getting a Pebble Time... It is not OK to refer to a trans woman as having "dad bod".'

The company, which has decided to leave the tweet up as a way to engage with the community and learn from its mistake, has since apologised.

In a later post, it wrote: 'To our trans colleagues, friends, & family, real talk: @Caitlyn_Jenner’s a hero. We’re sorry for a post that muddled our desire to honor her.'

And, to explain its decision to leave the initial tweet up, it wrote to one user: 'We honestly would like those impacted to say how we can genuinely show our support!

'Simply deleting reeks of rug-sweeping.'

The awards ceremony was Caitlyn's first major public appearance since announcing her transitioning during an April tell-all interview with Diane Sawyer.

The honoree got tearful toward the end of her 10-minute acceptance speech in which she gave a heartfelt appeal on behalf of trans youth.

'Trans people deserve something vital,' she said. 'They deserve your respect.'
