A Government rethink of the £34billion pension tax relief system has raised the threat of savers getting walloped twice if the changes unravel by the time they retire. You pay in from taxed income - and it is tax-free when you take it out. And in-between it receives a top-up from the Government.' But critics suggest switching to a pension regime where contributions are taxed before they go in, not when taken out during retirement as now, would cause a raft of problems and involve trusting future politicians not to slap taxes back on later.

TONY HETHERINGTON: RBS can't erase its loan disgrace with paltry £350 offer

Some years ago, my husband met a Royal Bank of Scotland representative who assured him we needed an RBS current account mortgage. We duly switched to this in 2004, but it quickly became apparent it was not a good idea as our photographic business became a victim of digital photography. We constantly asked RBS to change our mortgage, but unsuccessfully. I told the bank manager we were in difficulties, but he answered that he could only do something once we went into arrears. We borrowed from the family and over the next few years we paid £74,000 in interest alone. Finally, in despair, I rang a different department at RBS. It immediately offered a better deal, based on the information the bank had held all along.
