Lewis Hamilton pairs unusual long shorts with bold red trainers and a matching cap for daytime jaunt in NYC

He's trying to earn redemption from the fashion world after a sartorial blunder at Wimbledon that saw him disregard the Royal Box dress code.

And Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton is still in New York City after sitting front row for all of this week's Men's Fashion Week presentations but he continues to make sartorial steps in the wrong direction.

Lewis, 30, dressed down for a daytime jaunt around the designer capital on Thursday and couldn't be missed in a bright red cap and trainers, which he paired with unusual long shorts.

The single sportsman, who split from Hawaiian goddess Nicole Scherzinger earlier this year, smiled as he left his Soho hotel, sporting mirrored shades and long, multicoloured socks.

Lewis had tweeted this time last week to say that it was a real honour to be invited into the Royal Box to watch Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in the Wimbledon Men's Singles Final.

But he was embarrassingly sent on his way when he omitted a tie from his outfit choice and arrived in a floral Etro shirt, buttoned to the top with a bare collar.

Floral fashion lover Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen weighed in on the debate and called the sportstar 'petulant' and 'typically 'teenage'.

He said: 'I thought that was a bit petulant of him. When you get invited to the Royal Box, you're told from the outset, you need to wear a jacket and a tie.

'You're with Royalty, it's straight-forward. To turn up and then not wear the tie they give… I thought that was a bit sulky, a bit teenage.

'Actually it's such a huge accolade to be invited to the Royal Box at Wimbledon for the final, to actually say: 'No, I want to walk in dressed like that.' I think it's really quite irritating.'

Plenty have been quick to have their say, though Lewis is only accused of not adherring to the dress code.

It's not the first time that Lewis has been given a slap on the wrists when it comes to royal encounters nonetheless.

During a recent interview on the Graham Norton show, Lewis revealed how he was given a lesson in table manners by the Queen herself.

Lewis confessed during the interview: 'I was excited and started to talk to her but she said, pointing to my left, 'No, you speak that way first and I'll speak this way and then I'll come back to you''.

Etiquette expert Diana Mather explained that Lewis failed at the basic protocol of Turning The Table, which dates back to Victorian times, whereby the guest must wait to speak until they're addressed.

'She is a sweet woman,' he continued. 'And we talked about how she spends her weekends, houses and music. She is really cool.'
