Prince William was left blushing, after author Kathy Lette approached him at a polo match to ask him for a kiss.

Appearing on ITV's Lorraine, the comedian and author said the Prince had looked bored during a trophy presentation, so she decided to 'liven it up' by asking the question.

The Australian had been asked to present a trophy at the event by Clarence House and, having asked what the protocol should be, was told to kiss the Prince on the cheek as she handed it over.

'Before I met William, I asked what the protocol was for giving him the trophy and they told I should kiss him on the cheek when I gave it to him,' she told the presenter.

'Then I remember him walking towards me and he looked so unbelievably bored. So, when he came up to me I said: "Apparently I'm supposed to kiss you now - do you want tongue?"

He laughed and said "Maybe later".

Afterwards, said the 56-year-old, he returned to his brother and teammates who were 'killing themselves laughing' about the incident.

A second royal encounter then occurred, with a cheeky Prince Harry approaching to ask Lette the same question she put to William.

'They were so much fun and I think they were so pleased not to be treated like porcelain princes,' she added.

'They didn’t put me in the Tower, I’m still here!'

Ms Lette, who was appearing on the show to promote her new novel Courting Trouble, also spoke about her friendship with George Clooney who, she says, loads the dishwasher when he comes to her home for supper.

'[George] is so nice by the way and when they come for dinner, he clears the table and stacks the dishwasher,' she revealed. 'It's foreplay for females!

'Forget the Kama Sutra, that’s all you need to know, be domestic!... They’re really in love and it’s a total fairytale romance.'
