Chelsea joined by Brazilian youngster Kenedy for the first time as Jose Mourinho steps up training sessions on US tour in Montreal... but why did the goalkeepers train in a car park?

  • Chelsea are training ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season on their US pre-season tour in Montreal
  • The champions were joined for the session by Brazilian forward Kenedy who is joining from Fluminense for £6.3m
  • Jose Mourinho included young players in a 24-man group who were focused on ball-work from the off in Canada
  • Before the hard work got underway, the senior players took time to pose for photos with fans from their supporters' club
  • John Terry praised Jose Mourinho for his work in making sure his players can hit the ground running at start of season

Brazilian youngster Kenedy was among a 24-man group of Chelsea players training in Montreal on Friday as Jose Mourinho continued his double sessions in a bid to get his side up to speed with their Barclays Premier League rivals.

Chelsea started their preparations for the new campaign well after most of their expected challengers were back in business but the Portuguese coach has tasked his players with hitting the ground running when they kick off against Swansea City next month.

Friday's first session saw Kenedy added to the first-team group with his club Fluminese giving the 19-year-old permission to join up with the champions ahead of an imminent £6.3million move to Stamford Bridge.

Kenedy joins his countrymen Ramires and Oscar in Mourinho's group, while Filipe Luis and Willian will link up with the rest of the squad in New York on Wednesday ahead of the Blues taking on New York Red Bulls later in the evening.

Games against Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona follow in the States before a Community Shield meeting with Arsenal and one final friendly against Fiorentina at Stamford Bridge.

Friday's morning training session in the Seattle sun saw the players pose for photos with members of the local Chelsea supporters' club, with Branislav Ivanovic, Eden Hazard, John Terry and Thibaut Courtois among those happy to oblige for some touchline selfies.

Aside from that though, it was down to business with just five days to go until the Red Bulls clash in the Big Apple.

The full squad was out on the training field at the Montreal Impact Training Centre, raring to go as Mourinho looks to prime them for the start of the season. Victor Moses, who looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea turned down Stoke's advances, was among the 24 stars in training.

In a somewhat strange twist, goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon led Thibaut Courtois, Asmir Begovic and Jamal Blackman through an earlier session in a car park close to the centre where the stoppers skipped and climbed stairs to prepare themselves ahead joining the main group.

Chelsea skipper Terry sent out an ominous message to the Blues' rivals earlier in the day, stating his intention to continue driving a young and motivated squad to more trophies after their Premier League and Capital One Cup successes last season.

'This club will keep winning trophies with or without me,' Terry said. 'But I will keep driving the team on the training ground and on the pitch to keep achieving and keep winning trophies.

'The manager deserves a lot of credit for the work we do in pre-season. He gets everybody ready and sharp.

'With the signings we made last time we were able to hit the ground running, But players like Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic were on fire too. It probably took everyone back how we started.'

Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry, however, thinks that things may be more difficult for the reigning champions this time around.

'Other teams are going to adapt to what Chelsea are doing,' the former Arsenal striker said. 'You saw it at the end of last season when they were struggling to win games. They were winning them, but they were struggling to do so, and they were not winning them in the same way that they were at the beginning of the season.

'You have to be careful next year as people are going to adapt to what they did. But I am not worried for Mourinho and Chelsea because I know they are going to do everything in their power to make sure they can have a better squad and compete even more, and longer in the Champions League too.'
