Mistress kidnapped her lover's wife then murdered her before turning the gun on herself after being caught in high-speed Alabama police chase

A mistress abducted her lover's wife and shot her before turning the gun on herself when she was caught in a cross-state police chase.

Sandra Barnett was taken from her home in Ellenwood, Georgia, on Wednesday in a black Dodge Durango. 

The abduction was reported by one of the 49-year-old's relatives, who allegedly became suspicious after the SUV was seen outside her home.

The teacher had also recently changed the locks of her backgate after becoming concerned someone had tampered with it, 11 Alive reported.  

Officers spotted the vehicle on Thursday morning in west Georgia and chased it into Alabama.

Brad Robinson, chief deputy of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, said: '[We] pursued the vehicle [and] positively identified that that was the lookout vehicle. 

'They went through Haralson County, on into Alabama, where other agencies and officers assisted in the pursuit.'

The SUV stopped in Cleburne County and a standoff ensued, an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency spokesman said. 

The suspect, who has not been named, then reached into the backseat to grab a gun and shot Mrs Barnett before shooting herself. 

Both women died from gunshot wounds and could not be saved by authorities who approached the vehicle, police confirmed.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
