'I ain't afraid to die anymore': Leonardo DiCaprio breathes heavily as he seeks revenge from Tom Hardy in tense trailer for The Revenant

He has starred in several critically acclaimed films and has yet to taste Oscar gold himself.

But perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio will finally be staking his claim as he is playing real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass in his next project.

The 40-year-old actor could be seen sporting his burly beard in the first look trailer for The Revenant released on Friday.

Leo is not the only A-list actor featured in the clip as it seems like he and Tom Hardy's characters will be battling it out in the based by true events story.

One of the biggest elements of the clip is Hugh's heavy-breathing which can be heard in between battle scenes and an epic drum soundtrack from the 1:05 mark through the rest of the two-and-one-third minute video.

The trailer begins with Hugh dressed in a fur hat and coat as he stares up at a snowy mountain while holding onto a large walking stick.

He says: 'I ain't afraid to die anymore, I done it already.'

Then he is shown running through a forest while preparing to go to battle. He swings his firearm at an enemy but is taken down and has a bow at his throat when blood splatters across his head.

Shortly after the battle scene, the heavy breathing starts kicking in as Hugh is shown walking in the snow and sitting by a fire all by his lonesome.

In one of the short clips, Hugh is shown cleaning his gun when it was quickly grabbed away from him by John Fitzgerald, played by 37-year-old Tom.

As the men are an frontiersmen enterprise working together, the film's conflict comes when Hugh is left for dead after a bear mauling.

The attack from the carnivorous creature is shown very briefly in the clip as it lunges towards Hugh before the screen goes black. It then flashes to him laid out with a massive cut on his arm.

The rest of the film is sure to revolve around the protagonist seeking revenge against those that had abandoned him.

This is the first film Leo has starred in a film since 2013 Martin Scorsese flick The Wolf Of Wall Street.

In addition to the Titanic star and Tom, the cast of the flick features an almost all-male cast including: Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Paul Anderson, Brendan Fletcher, Brad Carter and Robert Moloney.

The adventure flick also has an established filmmaker behind the camera as Alejandro González Iñárritu helms the film fresh off his successful award season run with Birdman: Or (THe Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance).

The flick took home three Oscars including Best Achievement in Directing for Alejandro, Best Writing: Original Screenplay and the biggest award of the night Best Motion Picture of the Year.

The Revenant will have a limited release on Christmas day with a wide release on January 8. It will be followed by a release in the UK on January 15.
