Emotional Amanda Holden can't hold back the tears as she marks her final day as a host on This Morning ahead of Holly Willoughby's return

She's been a This Morning stalwart for several months while filling in for Holly Willoughby, who was on maternity leave.

And Amanda Holden couldn't hold back the flow of tears as she filmed her last day on the ITV daytime TV show alongside her co-host Phillip Schofield on Friday.

The 44-year-old wept live in front of the at-home audience of millions, crying into a tissue while also bearing a huge smile on her face as she was given the chance to re-live her best bits over the past nine months.

Amanda has been filling in for the show's usual presenter Holly, 34, who gave birth to her third child last September.

Showing that it has been a truly eventful and largely enjoyable time, the bubbly blonde star was shown a montage of her memorable moments.

And, although it was a happy occasion, the Britain's Got Talent judge just couldn't stop herself as she began to cry somewhat uncontrollably during filming on London's Southbank, before giving Phillip a huge hug as they marked the end of their time on the famous TV sofa together.

He told her: 'You have been absolutely stunning and amazing.'

She said, after seeing the emotional clip: 'I have to say it's been one of the happiest years of my life. I know it sounds dramatic but I've absolutely loved it.

'I'm going to be watching with you lot, back in my dressing gown,' she joked.

Holly, who will return to the daytime TV programme in September, made a brief appearance on the show in a pre-recorded clip.

'Hi Phil, hi Amanda, hi to you watching at home. I just want to say I am very, very much looking forward to coming back in September' she said.

'I can't believe it's been a year already. Amanda thank you so much for all your hard work. You've been absolutely brilliant.

'But it's time to give me back my silver fox because I shall be there in September. Phil have a lovely holiday, you need to be well-rested before I'm back in September!'

During the summer, This Morning will be hosted by Eammon Holmes and Ruth Langsford, while Phil will take his well-earned time off.

Meanwhile, Amanda made sure she went out with a stylish bang: over the months, viewers have been treated daily to her chic, classy and often colourful wardrobe.

And on Friday she looked a delight in a summer-perfect lemon yellow knitted top and printed pencil skirt in a similar, honey shade.

Her blonde locks were coiffed into elegant, loose waves and her make-up was clearly applied so expertly, her tears and screwed-up facial expressions didn't smudge the cosmetics.

She was also surprised with a performance from BGT singing group Revelation Avenue - the ones she pushed her famous Golden Buzzer for on this year's series - who serenaded her with a version of Katy Perry's Roar live.

Posing happily in front of a delicious and artistic creation, Amanda was treated to a special goodbye cake, too.

The final show also saw the presenters interview Britain's Got More Talent host Stephen Mulhern on the sofa, with Amanda throwing a glass of water over his head exactly like she did earlier this year.

She asked if Stephen was going to return to BGT again amid rumours that he may not return, he said: 'Of course I'm coming back, it's the tenth year next year.'

However, Amanda retorted with a reference to the time she threw water on him during an episode of BGT, before doing it once again.

Laughing, she said, 'It wasn't because of this, was it?' before covering him with the contents of the glass.

She added: 'It's my last day!'

Looking aghast at Phillip, Stephen asked him: 'Did you know she was going to do that?'

Phillip replied that he didn't, as Amanda admitted that 'I didn't know until just then!'.

Luckily Stephen, now soaking wet in his blue, sodden shirt, saw the funny side and attempted to get his own back with a jug of water.

Phillip explained the watery fracas between the two BGT co-stars: 'For anyone that missed this, it was the fact that during the show [Britain's Got More Talent] you likened Amanda to Jocelyn Wildenstein, who is 74.'

Stephen replied: 'Amanda is our longest serving judge… and we came up with this idea. The team said "do it, do it". Ant said "Don't do it", and Dec went "Do it!" So we did it…'

He hastened to add: 'If you've just tuned in, I'm not sweating, I've just had a glass of water thrown over me by the hostess!'

Phillip couldn't stop himself from laughing as he said: 'Well that was a fabulous moment, I loved that - it'll be on YouTube already!'
