Captain Kidd: Jodie proves a model co-pilot as she takes to the skies in wartime Spitfire plane for The Royal International Air Tattoo

It's no secret Jodie Kidd is a petrolhead with a passion for putting her foot down in some of the world's fastest cars.

But the model made a stylish switch from wheels to wings as she donned a jumpsuit and clambered into the cockpit of a Spitfire aircraft on Friday.

The pretty blonde jetted from Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit to The Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire accompanied by pilot Matt Jones.

The 36-year-old - who formerly graced the catwalks for designers including Lagerfeld and Chanel - put practicality over style as she pulled on the traditional zip-heavy, pocket-filled uniform.

She was all smiles as she boarded the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire T.9 aircraft making thumbs-up and peace signs to those watching from the ground below.

The murky, rainy conditions didn't deter Jodie and pilot Matt who performed stunts including a Cuban Eight, barrel roll and victory roll during their flight.

They touched down in south east England to launch the RAF Charitable Trust's two-day show which this year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Jodie told crowds at the event it was a 'great honour' to be on-board and added her family had close ties with the RAF which made the journey extra special.

As she landed Jodie was greeted by Battle of Britain veteran Sqn Ldr Geoffrey Wellum.

The 93-year-old former pilot may well have been disclosing a few flight tips as the pair laughed and chatted on solid ground.

The veteran airman was present for the mass fly-past scheduled for later that afternoon, featuring 12 spitfires, five Hurricanes, one Seafire, one Messerschmitt and one Buchon.

Despite being miles high the star still managed to look snazzy, wearing her blonde hair scraped back into a ponytail and dark sunglasses underneath her helmet.

She also managed to capture shots of the green fields below during her journey.

Another celebrity touching down at the Air Tattoo was Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson.

He was joined on-board the Eclipse EA.500 jet by Kevin Ogilvie, one of two scholars sponsored by the RAF's Charitable Trust.
