Cara Delevingne insists her bisexuality is not 'a phase' following Vogue backlash... as she reveals that being in love with girlfriend St Vincent has made her a better actress

She opened up about her relationship with girlfriend St Vincent for the first time in a candid interview with Vogue magazine last month.

But the in-depth feature about the British model sparked backlash when its writer implied Cara's bisexuality was just a 'phase', which led to 12,500 people signing a petition demanding the magazine issue an apology.

Now, the 22-year-old has given her side of the story, insisting that while she found nothing 'malicious' in Vogue's words, her sexuality definitely isn't a phase.

The interview in the July issue of Vogue, saw Cara confirm for the first time that she is in a relationship with singer/songwriter St Vincent - real name Annie Clarke - whom she's been virtually inseparable from for the past few months.

While Cara talked openly about her romance, the writer of the piece, Rob Haskell, paraphrased the model in one section, claiming that her family believe her bisexuality is nothing more than a phase.

Haskell wrote: 'Her parents seem to think girls are just a phase for Cara, and they may be correct.'

He continued: 'When I suggest to Cara that to trust a man, she might have to revise an old and stubborn idea of hers - that women are perennially troubled and therefore only women will accept her - her smile says she concedes the point.'

Haskell's comment led to 12,500 people worldwide signing a Care2 petition demanding the magazine apologise for publishing harmful stereotypes about bisexual women.

In a new interview with the New York Times to publicise her movie Paper Towns, Cara was asked about the protest, with the model and actress confessing that she was flattered so many were looking out for her but she saw 'nothing malicious' in the article itself.

She did clarify though: 'My sexuality is not a phase. I am who I am.'

Cara added that her relationship with St Vincent, 32, has helped her become a better actress, a craft she has only just started to tap into after starting her career on the runway.

She told the NY Times that a major challenge of acting has been learning to block out all the distractions in her chaotic life.

'Being in love helps, you know?' she explained. 'If you're in love with someone, you can be with them like no one else is in the room. Acting is like that. It's like taking that feeling and turning it on so nothing else matters when you're looking in another actor's face.'
