The Open set for Monday finish for first time since 1988 as 45mph winds batter the Old Course causing chaos at St Andrews again

  • Severe winds of up to 45mph have caused chaos at St Andrews once again
  • Second round is still incomplete as the weather forced a long suspension
  • Leader Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are yet to finish
  • No play will be possible until 4pm, when winds are expected to die down

The Open will finish on a Monday for the first time since 1988 and just the second time ever after severe weather caused chaos at St Andrews once again.

The second round of the 144th Open Championship is still incomplete after 45mph winds battered the Old Course on Saturday morning and forced a long suspension to play.

Leader Dustin Johnson, Grand Slam-chasing Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are among the players who still have not finished their second rounds after an attempt at wrapping up the first 36 holes was abandoned just half an hour after a 7am restart.

No play will be possible until at least 4pm on Saturday, when the winds are expected to die down sufficiently to stop balls rolling on the greens.

The R&A’s intention is to complete the second round on Saturday, play the third round on Sunday – the traditional finish day – and the final round on Monday.

The last time that happened was 27 years ago, when heavy rain flooded several greens at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Seve Ballesteros emerged victorious on The Open’s first ever Monday finish.
