US condemns IS attacks on Assyrian Christians in Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is condemning the Islamic State group for attacking Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria and abducting civilians.

The extremist group seized at least 70 people this week in attacks on river communities, including many women and children. Their fate is unclear.

White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan says the attacks and abductions are just the latest atrocities IS has perpetrated against innocent people. She's citing recent reports that IS took more than 100 Iraqi Sunnis captive near Tikrit, including children.

She says IS has also put Iraqi Kurdish prisoners in cages and paraded them in a display of brutality and disregard for human dignity.

Meehan says the U.S. will keep leading a global fight to degrade and destroy the group. And she says that ultimately IS will fail.
