The badly charred scroll (main picture), which looks more like a lump of charcoal, was found in an ancient synagogue in Ein Gedi, Israel. 3D scanning revealed the first eight verses of the Book of Leveticus written on the parchment (shown inset top left), which measures three inches long. Dating to around 500AD, it is the oldest ancient scroll from the Hebrew Bible after the Dead Sea Scrolls. Researchers hope to use similar techniques to decipher other suspected charred remains of scrolls (shown top right).

King Philip II's tomb uncovered in Greece: Analysis confirms skeleton belongs to the father of Alexander the Great
Using scanning and radiography, anthropologists from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid analysed skeletal remains in tombs in Vergina, Greece. The male skeleton in Tomb I was found to be 'strikingly tall' at around 6ft (180 cm), would have been approximately 45 years when buried and his leg bones showed a stiffened knee joint and signs of a knee injury. These findings are consistent with what the researchers know about the king. Using the same technique, the researchers concluded that the other remains belonged to an 18-year-old female, and an approximately newborn infant of unknown gender - believed to be Philip's wife Cleopatra and their newborn daughter Europa.
The village where only ROBOTS drive: Inside the autonomous driving test track where the buildings are fake and even the popup pedestrians are mechanical
At first glance it seems like any other city, with five lane roads, intersections, buildings and even pedestrians waving as you pass. However - they are all mechanical, and only robocars drive the town. It has been built to test the latest generation of self driving cars, and even the pedestrians are actually mechanical.

America like you've never seen it before: New Nasa camera provides an 'EPIC' view of Earth from a million miles away
The blue marble was captured by the Deep Space Climate Observatory's (DSCOVR) Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (Epic) and created by combining three separate images to show the Earth in incredible detail. It was presented to the White House today, prompting a tweet from President Barack Obama describing it as: 'A beautiful reminder that we need to protect the only planet we have.' These initial Earth images show the effects of sunlight scattered by air molecules, giving the images a characteristic bluish tint.
The end of urban sprawl? Ambitious plan to fit an entire CITY inside a single 'bee hive' skyscraper would house 25,000
The 'Vertical City' project features a slick-looking tower (concept pictured left), which would be population-dense and able to hold 2,500 people at any time. Unlike traditional skyscrapers, which are self-contained and shut off from the natural environment, the 180-floor Vertical City allows the outside elements to become part of the interior. Huge hexagonal voids would run up the side of the tower (pictured bottom right), allowing sunlight and rainwater to nourish the plant life housed inside. The bold project was overseen by Luca Curci, an architect based in Bari, Italy.
Let the Pluto conspiracy theories begin! Internet erupts with claims that New Horizons visit is the 'biggest lie in history'
Online conspiracy theorists have reacted to the stunning images of Pluto, like shown on the left, being sent back by the New Horizons spacecraft by claiming Nasa has faked them. They say Pluto and New Horizons spacecraft does not exist (like in the tweet on the left) or that the US government has been trying to hide evidence of aliens on the dwarf planet. One YouTube user has even posted images taken using his own backyard telescope and compared them to Nasa's images as evidence of the 'fraud'. However their views have been mocked on social media and by scientists.

'The solar system saved the best for last': Nasa releases stunning flythrough of mountains and vast icy plains in Pluto's mysterious 'dark heart'
Remarkable, high-definition images of Pluto have been released showing the vast icy landscape of the dwarf planet. 'I'm a little biased, but I think the solar system saved the best for last,' New Horizons principle investigator, Alan Stern, said during a press briefing. The stunning images were unveiled alongside two incredible animations of the dwarf planet, showing flyovers of the plains (inset) and mountains of the frozen world.
Nature's cauldron from above: Drone captures stunning footage of underwater 'volcano' erupting off coast of Turtle Mountain Island
The footage (still pictured, main) was captured by marine scientist Mario Lebrato from Spain. He said: 'We were diving to obtain volcanic sulphur, and while it happened we shot aerial video to explore the area.' Kueishantao Island (inset), reaches 1315ft (401m) above sea level at its peak, and is the southernmost of five small volcanic islands off the north-east coast of Taiwan. Kueishantao, also known as Guieshan Island, consists of andesitic lava flows and volcaniclastic material.
How the Ghost Army helped to foil the Nazis: Allied forces used decoy unit called the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops comprised of artists and sound technicians to trick the enemy during Second World War
During the Second World War the Allies employed dozens of tricks to confuse, mislead and intimidate the enemy. One such example was the Ghost Army - a team of 1,100 artists and illustrators whose job was to fool the Nazis into believing U.S. Army units were operating in areas they were not, or to trick them into thinking massive Allied forces were gathering nearby. To do this, they used a range of creative techniques, including inflatable tanks (pictured top and bottom right) and the broadcasting of audio (right) designed to give the impression forces of up to 30,000 troops were massing near the frontline.
What colours do YOU see when listening to these songs? Take the test that could reveal your inner synesthesia
Do you see colours when you hear music? It might seem like an odd question, but for one in 3,000 people, songs, lyrics and everyday sounds can make them see their own personal light show. Pharrell Williams, Billy Joel and Vincent Van Gogh were all thought to be among these selected few who have neurological condition called 'sound-to-colour synaesthesia,' or 'chromesthesia.' But one researcher believes that to a much lesser degree, many of us have a similar response to music, and now a new test can help you find out if you're one of them.
The 'Yes' to sex app: New mobile phone device films people giving consent to protect users from assault claims - but health workers condemn 'contracts' as 'evil'
The WeConsent app, created by a former banker, is designed to make sure that there's no trouble between partners the morning after the night before, as they film themselves giving consent. It uses an Apple iPhone's video camera to make a 20-second recording of both partners agreeing to sex. More than 100 people in the UK have already downloaded it, but critics branded sex contracts 'pure evil' and a 'dangerous notion.'
A self-driving SMASH: Watch Google's autonomous car get rear-ended as firm admits other drivers are hitting its prototype vehicles 'surprisingly often'
The footage of the car's data shows a self driving Lexus (in grey) stopping at a red light at a junction in Mountain View near the firm's HQ - then being rear ended by the car behind at 17mph. Google said 'Our self-driving cars are being hit surprisingly often by other drivers who are distracted and not paying attention to the road.'
