'She eats like a horse!' Simon Cowell defends super-slim Cheryl Fernandez-Versini as he reveals 'a bug' caused sudden weight-loss

Simon Cowell has jumped to the defence of Cheryl Fernandez-Versini after her recent weight-loss.

The 55-year-old music mogul insisted he isn't concerned about the 32-year-old singer's shrinking frame, because she has been 'eating like a horse' in recent weeks.

Simon - who is joined on the X Factor judging panel by Cheryl, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw - explained Cheryl's sudden weight-loss has been caused by 'a bug', and she hasn't intentionally been shedding the pounds.

Got her back: The X Factor boss said he's close enough to Cheryl to know she would never deliberately make herself thin and put her weight loss down to a bug

'She's eating like a horse': Simon Cowell has jumped to the defence of Cheryl Fernandez-Versini after her recent weight-loss caused concern among her fans

Speaking in an interview with The Sun newspaper's Dan Wootton, Simon said: 'This is not someone who's trying to make herself thin.

'I think she did pick up a bug and I think the way she's approaching what was addressed about her weight in a very open way - by saying she is thin and trying to put on weight - I don't think she would have done that two years ago.'

In fact, the X Factor boss revealed he and the pop princess have even been enjoying numerous calorific treats together, and went hunting for burgers when they arrived in Manchester earlier this month.

Simon joked: 'For some reason we wanted a Wimpy rather than a McDonalds. We couldn't find one in the end but we found another burger shop and she had the same as me.'

Cheryl first sparked concern among her fans when she was pictured looking slimmer than ever in a black crop top and flares at the Manchester X Factor auditions earlier this month.

But after one of her followers referred to her as a 'bag of bones', the pop princess quickly hit back and revealed she was grieving the death of her father-in-law.

But despite her irritation, Simon claims the brunette is in a much happier place than she was a year ago.

And Cheryl certainly looked as though she was well on her way to getting back to her best as she attended the X Factor auditions in London on Sunday.

Putting on a stunning sartorial display in a white tuxedo dress with black button detailing, the star added height to her slim legs with red strappy heels, while she styled her long brown locks into a chic low ponytail.

She fumed on her Instagram page: 'I am so sick and tired of it being ok to call somebody too thin or a 'bag of bones. I would never dream of calling somebody too fat and that they should maybe cut down on their food intake?

'What is the difference? You have no idea what I have been through. Just loosing my father in law v recently and everything that comes with that. Not that I am or should justify myself to anyone [sic].'

She continued to rage: 'I'm so f sick of people thinking it's ok to be mean or body shame anyone. And it's woman on woman. Have some respect and maybe think there may be reasons why before opening your mouth please [sic].'

Speaking at last week's auditions, Cheryl admitted she was 'eating lots' in a bid to regain her curves in the wake of a 'stressful' period in her life.

She said: 'It's not nice, but there are people out there going through similar things to me, it hurts them.'

Cheryl has previously explained she doesn't follow faddy diets, and prefers to enjoy everything in moderation.

She said in an interview FeelUnique.com in 2013: 'I don’t follow any strict diets, I just eat sensibly.

'I’m not eating McDonald’s or pizza every day but I do allow myself one cheat day a week, normally on a Sunday.

'I have a really sweet tooth and love cupcakes, doughnuts and basically anything that’s really bad for you.'
