Nintendo Download: 23rd July (North America)

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Binding of Isaac Rebirth! 3D Streets of Rage 2! Legend of Kay! Much more!

It's Nintendo Download Update time once again, and we have a fairly packed week in North America. We have a relatively controversial and long-awaited arrival on Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS, cross platform RPG goodness and some quirky efforts on the home console, while a budget retail entry on the system will certainly be popular. On 3DS we have a 3D Sega classic, a cross-buy option and a few other diverse downloads. Plenty to consider, so let's get to it.

Missed the European Nintendo Direct download update earlier in the week? You silly sausage! Don't worry, the information you need is right here.

Wii U eShop

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (Nicalis, $14.99) - Originally developed and released by Edmund McMillan (one half of Team Meat), this has been a long time coming on Nintendo hardware; previous attempts at release seemingly fell over due to religious themes. It's here now, with this Rebirth edition having improved visuals, new characters, over 100 new items and more, all within the procedurally generated dungeon crawling approach of the original. We'll get stuck into a review.

Canvaleon (OXiAB Game Studio, $11.95) - This is a promising 2D platformer / adventure title with a neat twist; beyond what looks like standard play you 'paint' your hero different colours to effectively camouflage them against the backdrop. Over 30 stages are promised, so we'll blend in and get working on a review.

Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria (Choice Provisions, $9.99 or free with an equivalent 3DS eShop purchase) - A humorous game that aims to give a mix of Final Fantasy adventure and silliness perhaps more readily associated with the likes of EarthBound, this promises plenty of content in combining what were originally separate titles. We'll quest our way to a review.

The Quiet Collection (Nostatic Software, $4.99) - This actually includes "four old-school adventure games": Quiet, Please!, Quiet Christmas, Vacation Vexation and Candy, Please!. These titles have previously been released on a mix of iOS, Android, Xbox 360 and Windows Phone, each with their own scenario and rather charming pixel-based visuals. We'll keep the noise down while working on a review.

Wii U Virtual Console

DK: Jungle Climber (Nintendo, $9.99) - A DS successor to GBA title DK: King of Swing, this utilises the shoulder buttons for you to swing your way between pegs, collecting items and tackling foes as you go. Gameplay is shaken up with a few quirks, while multiplayer is also included (and will hopefully feature here as it was a local one-cart feature); we'll swing into another review, but in the meantime you can check out our original recommendation of this game.

Wii U Retail Download

Legend of Kay Anniversary (Nordic Games, $24.99) - A remaster of a fondly remember PS2 title, this promises new HD detail, leaderboards and 60fps performance, all for a budget retail price. We'll work on a review to see whether this is a worthy 10th Anniversary celebration. Available on 28th July.

Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (WayForward, on discount from 26th July to 2nd August)

Mighty Switch Force! 2 (WayForward, on discount from 26th July to 2nd August)

Midnight (Petite Games, $0.99 until 6th August, normally $1.99)

New Nintendo 3DS eShop

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (Nicalis, $14.99) - This portable iteration is only available on the New Nintendo 3DS, and though it's packed with all of the core content it doesn't have the local co-op mode.

3DS eShop

3D Streets of Rage 2 (Sega, $5.99) - As gamers of a certain age that are also big fans of retro Sega, the 3D series developed by M2 continues to press all the buttons of some of our team. This release is particularly exciting for your humble writer, who regards this as a true tour-de-force in beat-em up action, now on the 3DS in lovely 3D. We'll crack some skulls and bring you a review soon.

Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria (Choice Provisions, $9.99 or free with an equivalent Wii U eShop purchase) - As per the Wii U release, but with stereoscopic 3D in place of HD visuals.

Fantasy Pirates (EnjoyUp Games, $0.99) - Another entry from the prolific Spanish publisher / developer, this is a 15-stage adventure in which you navigate your pirate boat with 360-degree movement to find treasure and sink rivals; it's also promising a 1 vs. 1 online mode. We're still sailing the seas for a review.

Epic Word Search Collection (Lightwood Games, $7.99) - This promises 'huge' puzzles in which you use the Circle Pad / D-Pad and stylus to find and highlight a lot of words. What else can be said?

I Love My Cats (Bigben Interactive, $24.99) - We imagine this is rather like I Love My Dogs, but with cats. It's all in the title.

3DS Temporary Discounts

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (WayForward, on discount from 26th July to 2nd August)

Mighty Switch Force! 2(WayForward, on discount from 26th July to 2nd August)

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker (Atlus, $39.99 until 27th July, normally $49.99)

Real Heroes: Firefighter 3D (Reef Entertainment, $4.99 until 6th August, normally $9.99)

3DS HOME Themes

Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: Café Theme

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX

BOXBOY!: Qbby & Friends by Starlight

That's everything for this week in North America. Let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

I'll add The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth to my list of reasons to get a New 3DS. That makes one so far.

What a great week!

Will be getting Binding of Isaac, Dragon Fantasy & 3D Streets of Rage 2 for my N3DS XL. I already have the first two on my Vita but they are worth a double dip.

Isaac on 3DS for me. Will probably get Dragon Fantasy as well because it looks great and I want to support anybody who is offering cross-buy. It's kind of a kick in the teeth that Nicalis aren't offering even a cross-buy discount on Isaac. Especially considering that it's only for the New 3DS, which is, uh... relatively, you know... New.

I'll try Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria. I already own Binding of Isaac via a Humble Bundle Sale and it mostly just sits there in my Steam collection. No need to have a second copy doing the same.

I really wish they would get their act together on the Virtual Console front however. I really want Final Fantasy II & III (US), but I despise the idea of having to buy them on the Wii Shop. I want to play them with off-tv mode. Heck, I would even be happy with FF III and FF IV DS.

@Tops I'm going to guess it's not selling well at the original 50$ price. I'd buy it but I just got Persona Q and I can wait till it dips below 30$ tbh.

Devil Survivor 2 is already on sale on the eshop, huh? Maybe people aren't feeling the inflated price tag.

Good week, but for me it is all about Streets of Rage 2!

All I've ever seen of this "Binding of Issac" game is that one screen shot of the little derpy thing crying, surrounded by monsters. What's this game about? Hope the review explains things a little better.

Already have the Binding of Isaac Rebirth and Devil Survivor 2, so I'll probably be picking up the new EO theme and that's it.

@grumblebuzzz It's a rogue like game, where you attempt to get to the end of the dungeon with different powers. The maps are different between playthroughs. It's a really fun game actually.

There's too much stuff to buy this week that I most like won't play for a long time. I need to draw the line somewhere but if I don't get the game I'll forget about it. There is definitely not a lack of games for me, just a lack of time to play games.

Getting Streets if Rage and will probably get the retail disc version of Legend of Kay. I enjoyed that game on PS2, and if nothing else, I'd like to add it back into my collection so when my son gets older I can introduce the game to him. I already have the Binding of Isaac on PS4. Really twisted, lots of fun.

Easily the best week from a digital perspective in a very long time. Definitely getting Binding of Isaac. Dragon Fantasy and Canvaleon are possible future purchases after I learn more. Oh, and I may decide to relive some of my teenage years and get Streets of Rage 2 sometime.

Edit: Why did the last couple weeks suck so much? Couldn't Nintendo work with the developers to spread the love?

I already made this comment on Pushsquare earlier in the week but it fits here as well:

No demos again? Legend of Kay and Birth of Isaac seem like 2 games that would be demo friendly. Kay is in my Amazon kart waiting for the review. A JRPG like Dragon Fantasy might not be demo friendly, but I'll pick it up at that price after I finish M&L Superstar Saga which I just started yesterday. My wife can play on her work commute and I'll play on the Wii U so that's only $5 each.

Pretty great week. Dragon Fantasy 3D and Streets of Rage 2 for me when I get a chance. I'm glad they added some stereoscopic 3d for Dragon Fantasy it should look pretty neat. Well I was hoping for Gotcha Racing maybe next week.

@Spoony_Tech I feel the exact same way. On the other hand the 3DS can only hold 300 downloadable Titles I've been meaning to count up what I have. It's gotta be at least 200. Hope I never lose my system and not bad for a guy who swore never to download a game from the Eshop in the beginning. The insanity of it all

Definitely Legend of Kay, I've been craving a good platforming/adventure game. Also Dragon Fantasy has peaked my interest. Watched some videos for Canvaleon too, it looks like a pretty solid game! Hope it gets some more coverage on NL.

Probably... so many, I've lost count.

Great week! Binding of Isaac on BOTH platforms (not interested in it personally, but I know the demand for it is high), Dragon Fantasy which I'm grabbing (with cross-buy!), and a Shantae discount. I wanted the 3DS version of it rather than Wii U but noticed the Wii U version was discounted and the 3DS version wasn't. That $20 price tag was keeping me away.

Dragon Fantasy for me if the reviews are good. Some good discounts it looks like as well, as there usually is.
