Chances are, your first glimpse at a movie usually comes in the form of a movie poster. The movie poster is a confounding beast: It can be plain trash or high art, hack work or startlingly original.
How often have you seen that lone action hero, posing heroically, giving the faintest of glances over his heroic shoulder? Or two quirky lovers, leaning against each others' backs, million dollar smiles on their face.
Posters, like the films they market, can fall prey to tropes. Sometimes it happens out of genuine admiration of a better piece, but usually it's just because the graphic designer is adamantly averse to taking risks.
But posters will always remain an extremely effective and powerful tool. The best ones develop their own fans, who are willing to spend copious amounts of money on a flashy frame.
