Allegations that real estate tycoon Donald Trump 'violated' his ex-wife have resurfaced as he continues his presidential campaign.

Ivana Trump, from whom the Apprentice star family split in the early 1990s, once used the term 'rape' to describe what it felt like during a 1989 alleged incident between the couple.

The allegations, which came from a deposition during the Trumps' divorce, were revealed in the 1993 book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump.

Online news magazine The Daily Beast brought up the claims in a piece on Sunday, noting that Ivana later backed away from her use of the word rape and said that she felt 'violated' during the sexual episode rather than 'raped'.

'This is an event that has been widely reported on in the past, it is old news and it never happened,' a Trump spokesman told Daily Mail Online.

'It is a standard lawyer technique, which was used to exploit more money from Mr. Trump -- especially since he had an ironclad prenuptial agreement.'

'It is just a way for the badly failing and money losing Daily Beast, which has been reporting inaccurately on Mr. Trump for years, to get some publicity for itself,' the spokesman said.

The alleged violent sexual encounter revealed in the book by reporter Harry Hurt III was said to have stemmed from a incident where the future presidential candidate became mad after a plastic surgeon used by Ivana left her husband in pain from a bald spot removal operation.

'Your f****** doctor has ruined me,' Trump allegedly said before what the book describes as a 'violent assault' where he tore out pieces of her hair and 'jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months'.

Ivana Trump allegedly told her 'closest confidantes' that her husband had raped her.

She later clarified her words in a foreword to the book saying: '[O]n one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage'.

'As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited towards me, was absent. I referred to this as a ‘rape,’ but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.'

A Notice to the Reader on the book said that Ivana's statement 'does not contradict or invalidate any information contained in this book'.

Donald Trump denied the allegation in 1993, criticized it as 'obviously false' and labeled Hurt III as having no talent.

The divorce was ultimately granted on Trump's 'cruel and inhuman treatment' of his wife. She is legally barred from speaking about the marriage without his permission.

Beyond the allegations, the Daily Beast piece garnered attention for a member of The Trump Organization's defense of his boss.

Special counsel Michael Cohen reportedly told the outlet that it was impossible for rape to happen within a marriage.

'You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as private individual who never raped anybody,' Cohen was quoted as saying.

'And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse.'

The lawyer, whose LinkedIn page says that he has worked for the Trump Organization for more than eight years, appeared to double down on his words.

'It is true,' he reportedly said. 'You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.'

New York's marital exemption law regarding rape ended in 1984.

A person close to the candidate told DailyMail.com: 'In regards to those assertions, No one speaks for Mr. Trump but Mr. Trump.'

Cohen, who told the Daily Beast that he had read the relevant pages of Ivana's deposition, gave a lengthy defense of Trump's actions regarding the 1989 case

'She felt raped emotionally…She was not referring to it [as] a criminal matter, and not in its literal sense, though there’s many literal senses to the word,' he said.

His statements echoed the message from the businessman's first wife that appeared on the first page of Lost Tycoon.

However, the Daily Beast's article claims they received more from Cohen than the Trumps' standard line on the incident.

The piece written by reporters Tim Mak and Brandy Zadrozny saw Cohen explode with statements such as: 'You write a story that has Mr. Trump’s name in it, with the word ''rape,'' and I’m going to mess your life up…for as long as you’re on this frickin’ planet…you’re going to have judgments against you, so much money, you’ll never know how to get out from underneath it'.'

'And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know,' Cohen reportedly told the outlet. 'So I’m warning you, tread very f****** lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be f****** disgusting. You understand me?' the Daily Beast quotes him as saying at another point.

'So you do whatever you want. You want to ruin your life at the age of 20? You do that, and I’ll be happy to serve it right up to you,' he allegedly said.

The piece comes in a media frenzy around Trump, who has begun surging in Republican opinion polls despite being mired in controversy for much of his campaign.

His Miss America and Miss Universe pageants lost their broadcasters after a statement in his announcement speech said that migrants from Mexico were thieves and rapists.

Cohen's comments were already generating backlash on Monday night.

Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, who has worked on bills about sexual assault, said 'I spent years in the courtroom as a prosecutor, and it is incompetent for any lawyer to not know that rape is rape.'

'Giving Akin a run for his money,' she added, referring to the former Missouri congressman who challenged her for a Senate seat but lost after a comment about 'legitimate rape'.
