Wheel-y fun! Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys ride bicycles together during a romantic day out in Brooklyn

Their lives imitated art when The Americans co-stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys became a couple both on and off the screen.

On Sunday, the 39-year-old actress and the 40-year-old actor enjoyed that fact with a bicycle ride in Brooklyn, New York.

With both looking cool in summertime clothing, it seemed to be a pleasant ride for the actors.

Keri covered her dark blonde hair with a straw-coloured fedora and wore sunglasses over her eyes.

That hair - once a source of controversy when Keri starred on Felicity between 1998 and 2002 - looked to have been tied into two braids before one came loose.

A white-striped, sleeveless shirt served as Keri's top, worn with denim shorts and brown-strapped sandals.

Matthew went for a slightly more casual look than his girlfriend, wearing a black Puma baseball cap over his dark hair.

Dark glasses and a heavy beard further obscured the actor's face.

His clothing consisted of a navy-blue T-shirt and khaki trousers, worn with flip flops.

The Americans, a Cold War drama set in the early 1980s, premiered in the winter of 2013 and told the story of a seemingly normal suburban couple who were secretly Soviet spies.

As Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, Matthew and Keri had a turbulent relationship on-screen while falling for each other in the real world off-screen.

Keri separated from her husband, Shane Deary - with whom she has a son, eight-year-old River, and a daughter, three-year-old Willa - that spring, and the co-stars were a couple by the end of 2013.

Despite plenty of critical acclaim for The Americans, the show has garnered low ratings and has mostly been snubbed for major awards.

In both 2013 and 2014, The Americans did get named the American Film Institute's Television Program Of The Year

The show later won a Peabody Award in 2015, and was named the Best Drama winner at the 2015 Critics' Choice TV Awards.

Still, The Americans' only Emmy nominations have been for its opening theme, for guest actress Margo Martindale, and for writing in 2015.

Season 3 was only been able to keep an audience of just over 4 million, even when DVR numbers were factored in, but FX still renewed the program for season four in March.
