Eva Longoria lashes out at Australian newspaper following claims she 'sold-out' by 'pretending to need spectacles' for promotional purposes

Eva Longoria has launched a furious broadside against an Australian newspaper for accusing the star of pretending to need spectacles in order to market herself through an association with a popular brand.

The actress has signed on as a style ambassador and judge for the 2015 Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year – a role previously undertaken by actresses Sarah Michelle Gellar, Margot Robbie and Christina Hendricks.

But she was singled out by the Sydney Morning Herald after sporting a pair of thick rimmed glasses to a promotional event at the Hotel Centennial in Woollahra during her recent trip to Australia.

The publication claimed Eva – whose previous marketing endeavours include an ambassadorial role for DINE cat food, despite not owning a cat – was a ‘serial offender when it comes to selling out in a not so subtle way.’

Posting across social media, the 40-year-old responded to claims that she doesn’t need to wear glasses by sharing three spliced images in which she is seen sporting spectacles at a variety of events.

Accompanying the shots with a lengthy response to the Herald, Eva claimed to have needed eye-wear since May 2013, when she suffered from ‘blurred vision’ while studying for a Master’s Degree.

She wrote: 'I went in for an eye test (again on May 3, 2013) and the optometrist said I needed reading glasses and gave me a prescription from which I bought 5 pairs of glasses (again in 2013 and available for you to see).

'The reason your lazy journalist research of "googling" didn't turn up more pictures of me on the "red carpet" is because I don't need glasses to see far, only to READ.'

Rounding off her response to the reporter behind the article, she added: 'So next time you want to write an article calling someone "shameful" why don't you do your research because that is your responsibility as a "journalist" and the Sydney Morning Herald should hold you to that "high" standard even though you are just the Lifestyle journalist.

'It sounds like maybe you need some glasses yourself. In that case @SpecsaversAustralia has some awesome, stylish glasses available! I recommend the Collette Dinnigan collection!'

Posting a shot of a blank web-page, she wrote: 'Thanks to the @theinquisitr for taking down the article from @smh by @jennamclarke because it was false.

'If only Sydney Morning Herald had the same class to even return our calls to apologize for their mistake! #ThoughtUWereAllToughPrintingIt #NowYouveGoneSilent.'
