Kanye West throws microphone into the air and storms off stage after sound malfunction at Pan Am Games

He's always pushing boundaries, and now Kanye West has given new meaning to 'drop the mic'.

The rapper, 38, was headlining the closing ceremony at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada on Sunday when his microphone cut out due to technical issues.

The malfunction caused perfectionist West to throw his mic into the air and leave the stage just 13 minutes into his set at the Rogers Centre.

West was in the middle of an energetic performance when his microphone sound cut out at exactly 10pm, just as he launched into The Good Life, reports Billboard.

The frustrated musician then hurled his mic into the air and left the stage without a word.

His sudden exit confused the stadium crowd, who couldn't hear anything due to the technical issues.

However, the TV audience watching at home had a different experience, as they were still able to hear the sound up until the point he walked off stage, reports The Huffington Post.

CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, later tweeted the problem was due to 'technical issues'.

Despite the troublesome microphone, West thrilled the audience with a short-but-electric performance, jumping and leaping into the air and giving his all to the 40,000-strong crowd.

Although the critically-acclaimed rapper performed just half of his set, he still made it through his hits Power, Stronger and Black Skinhead.

The All Day rapper then launched into Touch The Sky, imploring the crowd to 'jump, jump, jump' and leaping high into the air in his trademark Adidas Yeezy 350 Boost sneakers.

West, whose reality star wife Kim Kardashian is expecting their second child, expertly commanded the large stage - leaping, skipping, falling to his knees and even laying down on his back during the intense set.

The fashion-loving artist wore light ripped jeans, a blue tie-died tunic sweatshirt, a black belt and thick gold chain for the performance.

At one point, he called for the stadium lights to be turned onto the crowd, and gave a shout-out to all the athletes.

'Oh yeah, we’re gonna have a good time tonight,' the 38-year-old promised the crowd, before launching into All Of The Lights and The Good Life - at which point his mic cut out.

The frustrated rapper then hurled his mic into the air and left the stage without a word, much to the confusion of his stadium audience.

West obviously felt it was better to cut short the show than to continue on with technical difficulties.

Yeezy was a controversial choice for the Pan Am Games closing ceremony, with 20,000 people signing an online petition calling for a Toronto musician - like rapper Drake - to get the high-profile gig.

Last month, an unsuccessful petition to remove West as the headline act at Glastonbury Music Festival attracted more than 50,000 signatures.

Rapper Pitbull and Toronto artist Serena Ryder also performed at the closing ceremony on Sunday.

The Pan Am Games brings together athletes from the across the Americas to compete in summer sports, and is held every four years in the year before the Summer Olympics.

On Monday, West seemed to put the drama behind him, even flashing a rare smile as he touched down in Los Angeles.

The musician looked upbeat as he arrived at LAX international airport, no doubt looking forward to being reunited with wife Kardashian and toddler daughter North after his trip to Toronto.

The rapper threw an olive hoodie over his head and beamed broadly as he disembarked from his flight.

The rapper-turned-fashion designer again wore ripped jeans and his Adidas Yeezy sneakers for the trip home.

Under his hoodie, West wore a faded dark T-shirt with distressed detail and what appeared to be paint splatters, in keeping with his artistic temperament. He tucked a slim gold chain under his shirt.

The stylish rapper looked more somber as he exited Terminal 2, squinting into the sun and holding his phone as he made his way out of the airport.

The New Slaves rapper soon ditched his smile in favor of his typical, more serious look as he made his way through the airport.

West has had run-ins with photographers at LAX before, including a scuffle with a photographer in July last year.

The New Slaves hit-maker was no doubt hoping to avoid any trouble with photographers as he arrived back in his adopted hometown.

Steal Kim's style in a plunging long-sleeve jumpsuit this summer

Kim Kardashian-West is not letting the fact she's pregnant take her off course when it comes to her signature style.

Super tight, form fitting, skin baring, high heels; not your usual maternity wear but Kim is working it for all its worth. And last night at an event in Los Angeles, the reality television starlet once again showed her bump off in her own inimitable style.

This jumpsuit is not only sheer, it's got a plunging neckline and clings to Kim's curves in all the right places. It may have long sleeves but there's nothing demure about this all-in-one. It certainly makes a change from frumpy polka dot maternity dresses.

Whether you're expecting or not, we can all take inspiration from Kim's statement look. We've picked out some fabulous jumpsuits with deep V-necks that will help you recreate her look at the click of the mouse.

We love Bec & Bridge's version at Shopbop but Missguided has a revealing bargain buy that's hard to beat.
