He admitted in an interview this month that being a dad to his five-year-old son Julian is what has helped him through a difficult year.

And Robin Thicke's close bond with his boy was plain to see on Tuesday as the pair hit the beach with the Blurred Lines hitmaker's girlfriend April Love Geary.

Robin, 38, stripped down to his swimming shorts to splash around in the surf with his son, while his 20-year-old girlfriend wowed in a skimpy white sundress.

Robin had a huge smile on his face as he watched little Julian in the water, dressed in a pair of blue and red trunks.

A necklace hung around his neck, while the singer added a pair of aviator shades.

The star kept a close eye on his son as they splashed around, with the adventurous little boy getting a face full of water at one point.

The plucky youngster recovered quickly with the help of his doting dad though, who quickly picked him up as a lifeguard came over to check the two were OK.

After some comforting words from his dad, little Julian soon looked in better spirits.

The pair were joined at the beach by April, who stuck to the sand in a floaty white dress.

The strappy number showed off the 20-year-old's slender tanned legs, while she added a wide-brimmed black hat as the trio strolled around and chatted with friends.

Robin and April's relationship appears to be going from strength to strength since they got together six months ago.

The singer struck up a romance with his younger girlfriend following his split from wife Paula Patton, with their divorce finalised in March after ten years of marriage, and a relationship of 22 years.

39-year-old Paula, Julian's mum, filed papers in October stating that they had reached a property settlement and a custody arrangement that is acceptable to both.

The couple originally announced their separation a year before the divorce went through, ending their long-term romance in February 2014.

Speaking to the New York Times this month, Robin, who was found guilty of plagiarising Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit Got to Give It Up this spring, admitted that Julian was the one who has helped him through a challenging year.

'The moment when I put my son first in all my movements and decisions is when everything changed for me,' he explained. 'I'd been in love with my high school sweetheart for 20 years, and I knew nothing else — and when that fell apart, I lost hope and faith in the good things.'

'And then with some time off to just put my son first, I realised how special my life is, just with him. Everything got better from that moment on. So that's what my new album is about.'
