SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Nicky Clarke claims Kate's greying hair is a disaster!

The Duchess of Cambridge was happy to let a few of her glossy chestnut locks go grey while she was pregnant with Princess Charlotte, but hairdresser to the stars Nicky Clarke has urged the future queen never to do so again.

Clarke, who tended the tresses of Princess Diana and the Duchess of York, among many others, says women should never let their hair lose its colour, although different rules apply for men.

‘Kate needs to get rid of her grey hair — it’s not a good look,’ he tells me at a party at his Mayfair salon.

‘She does have amazing things done to her hair and it can look great, but unfortunately it’s the case for women — all women — that until you’re really old, you can’t be seen to have any grey hairs.’

Prince William’s 33-year-old wife revealed a small patch of silver in February when she was six months pregnant. It is widely believed that mothers-to-be should not dye their hair for fear of inhaling noxious chemicals, which could pass through to the baby and lead to birth defects.

Nicky, who still boasts his famously thick head of blond hair at the age of 57, says grey would be ‘disastrous’ for Kate.

‘It’s different for men,’ he says. ‘Men can go grey in their mid-50s and still be considered attractive — it’s the whole silver fox thing — but it’s not the same for women.

Kate is such a style icon that even a few strands of grey would be a disaster, so I highly recommend that she cover it up. I hate grey hair.’

It is not the first time that Nicky, who received an OBE from the Queen in 2008 for 30 years’ service to the hair styling industry, has criticised Kate’s tresses. Before she married into the Royal Family in 2011 he said of her hairstyle choices: ‘She’s not the most adventurous, is she?’

If Nicky’s hoping to take over from Kate’s current hairdresser, Amanda Cook Tucker, the crabby crimper’s going a funny way about it.

Faithfull stuck with a stick as Mick rocks on

While wrinkly rocker Sir Mick Jagger still prances around on stage at 72, his ex-girlfriend Marianne Faithfull is finding getting round more of a struggle.

The 68-year-old singer, who was famously wearing only a fur rug during a drugs raid at the home of Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards in the Sixties, needed a walking stick to climb the stairs while attending a charity event in Ireland this week.

She has used the cane since breaking her hip in a fall last year.

Navigating the slippery steps, Marianne still managed to look glamorous in a pussy-bow blouse and pashmina.

Although tousled by the wind, her distinctive blonde hairstyle remains little changed from her heyday.

Prince Harry's trip to  Botswana

Dismissed by some as just an ‘adventure holiday’, Prince Harry’s visit to Africa to support conservation projects is nevertheless a journey close to his heart.

Harry is spending time in Botswana, where he was taken as a boy after his mother’s death, a close friend of his father has disclosed.

‘One day in 1997 I received a call from Prince Charles,’ says Geoffrey Kent. ‘He told me about Princess Diana being tragically killed, and he was very distressed and asked me to take Prince Harry on a trip.

‘We leaked a story that we were going to Tanzania, and in the meantime we went to Maun, Botswana. We had an amazing time.’

Get your very own Downton doggie

Downton Abbey viewers were left in tears when the unfortunately named labrador Isis was killed off, but they might now have the chance to own a real-life ‘Downton doggie’.

Lady Carnarvon has helped deliver a litter of cocker spaniels at Highclere Castle, where the series is filmed, and she plans to give them away.

‘The first one was born on a sofa in the castle,’ Fiona Carnarvon says.

‘The next was sadly still-born, a very low point.

Number three was born some four hours later. The last one was born at the vet’s.’

Given the fortune the Carnarvons have made from their Downton connection, could they be tempted to charge for the aristocratic animals?

Pained to watch the Lib Dems, who won 46 seats under his leadership at the 1997 general election, reduced to a pitiful eight, Paddy Ashdown has also suffered the indignity of being rejected as a novelist.

‘I wrote a thriller of 120,000 words and gave it to my agent,’ Lord Ashdown tells me at a party at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington.

‘He looked at me quite sadly and said, “Paddy, you can write good history books, but you can’t write thrillers. Give it up — stick with what you can do.”’
