It is arguably the greatest of all blaxspoitation movies.

Kenya Barris has been handpicked to pen the new movie in a move that will see him team up with The Goldbergs executive producer-writer Alex Barnow.

In a nice nod to symmetry, both writers' shows feature on the ABC network.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E reboot producer John Davis will be handling similar duties on the New Line film alongside Ira Napoliello, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

However the move is sure to add even more fire to those who complain movie studios are indulging in far too many remakes, especially as the property already 21st century reboot in 2000 which starred Samuel L. Jackson.

Fans of the classic 1971 private eye thriller may also be concerned that the new version will have a comedic tone, though some action elements will remain.

The original movie followed the antics of private detective John Shaft, a role that luanched then unknown Richard Roundtree to stardom.

His action packed adventure to find a missing girl in Harlem was so successful it spawned the sequels Shaft's Big Score and Shaft in Africa.

It is one of the most famous of all Blaxploitation films, a genre that proponents claim embraced the black empowerment culture of the 70s, though some also complained it reinforced stereotypes.

A standout soundtrack by funk star and future South Park Chef Isaac Hayes was another memorable aspect of the original.

It seems Barris and Barnow are being groomed for big things at New Line, as they previously teamed up to write a comedy about a white man who begins to hear Ice Cube’s voice in his head, which the company picked up earlier this year.

While the former is best known for Black-ish, he also worked on the eagerly anticipated Barbershop 3 and he is also developing a big-screen version of TV show Good Times.

His sidekick meanwhile was one of the brains behind flop Matthew Perry comedy Mr. Sunshine and was a staff writer on Family Guy.
