Leonardo DiCaprio picks up award for his environmental work... before spending a WEEK sailing round the Mediterranean on his luxury yacht

  • Leonardo DiCaprio handed award by Prince Albert of Monaco last week
  • It came the day before he hosted a massive charity gala in Saint Tropez
  • After the event he was spotted sailing on yacht around South of France
  • He's previously been accused of taking six private jet flights in six weeks

Proudly standing beside the Prince of Monaco, Leonardo DiCaprio clutched his most recent award for his work protecting the planet, just hours before raising $40million for his environment charity.

And after all his hard work he celebrated by spending the rest of the week on board his luxury yacht, sailing around the Mediterranean - including Saint Tropez, France, and Sardinia, Italy.

The 40-year-old environmental activist has previously been accused of hypocrisy over his carbon footprint after a leaked document alleged he had taken six private jet flights in six weeks.

He was in the South of France to host his second annual fundraiser for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation last Wednesday when he dropped by Monte Carlo to pick up the trophy.

Prince Albert II handed him the Mediation Division award on the eve of the gala for his 'commitment to sustainable development and against global warming', the MonteCarloNews reports.

The Royal and the Hollywood heavyweight went on to join an army of A-list stars including Sir Elton John, Naomi Campbell and Michelle Rodriguez at the glittering event in Saint-Tropez, the next night.

It featured a live auction of fine art, luxury items and one-off experiences, including two private concerts to see Sir Elton, which sold for $3million.

The auction gave guests the chance to snap up a number of the star's personal items, including a Rolex watch and Andy Warhol and Bansky artworks from his own collection.

He told those at the Domaine Bertaud Belieu, he said: 'Tonight’s event is about supporting LDFs efforts to protect key species like the tiger, rhino, shark, and mountain gorilla by working with governments to conserve the jungles, coral reefs and forests they call home.

'By focusing on protecting these critically-endangered iconic species is almost like setting up a worldwide network of Noah's arks.

'We've decimated our forests, wildlands, polluted and over fished our rivers and oceans; all the key ecosystems that not only serve as a home to our planet’s biodiversity, but also make life here for us possible.

The Prius driver, who owns multiple homes, even made his way to California in between the moorings for a spot of kite surfing on a Malibu beach.

Earlier this year he came under accusations of hypocrisy after he allegedly took six private jet flights in just six weeks in 2014.

RadorOnline claimed he had taken more than $200,000 worth of private travel between LA and New York between April and May, last year.

Wikileaks published the complete Sony leak including a searchable database for the 173,132 emails and 30,287 separate documents taken from the studio's servers last November.

It's been claimed the hack was a warning to the studio not to release the film The Interview, about an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

RadarOnline said that several documents relating to Sony corporate travel records show the star made the roundtrips, with the studio picking up the cost of the plane, catering and car service between destinations.

According to the documents, on April 17, 2014, DiCaprio flew from Los Angeles to New York at a cost of $63,000 for a filmmaker’s meeting that, it was noted, could only be done in person.

His then-girlfriend Toni Garrn was listed as accompanying him on the private jet..

On April 27, they flew back to Los Angeles at a cost of $63,000, plus $3,000 in catering and $300 in car service on each end.

On that trip and other work trips paid for by Sony, DiCaprio was also accompanied by male friends who were members of his infamous 'pussy posse' in the late 1990s.

They included actors Lukas Haas, Scott Bloom and Vincent Laresca,

Just six days after returning from New York, DiCaprio was back on board a private jet heading back to the Big Apple for another meeting at a cost of $37,306.60, plus $1,506.60 in catering and $800 in car service.

He flew back to Los Angeles on May 31, according to the documents, at a cost of $55,000. His mother Irmelin DiCaprio was also listed as being expected to travel with him..

Travel records also state that he was then booked on a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

He stayed in Sin City for just eight hours before flying home again. The projected cost of that round-trip flight was $12,000.

Four months later, the actor was back in New York to accept another environmental award - the Clinton Global Citizen Award - for his preservation efforts.

DiCaprio failed to comment at the time of the revelations when approached for comment by MailOnline.

But earlier this month he decided to put his money where his mouth is and donated $15million to various environmental causes to empower activists and organisations.

The millions in grants will support organizations including efforts to preserve the Earth's delicate ocean ecosystems and those working to protect the endangered gorillas in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
