The face of evil: Johnny Depp is unrecognizable as gangster Whitey Bulger on the first Black Mass poster
While playing the likable and comedic rogue has been his go to lately, this time he is getting serious - deadly serious.
Johnny Depp is far from funny in the poster for his latest movie, Black Mass.
Released Wednesday, in the poster the 52-year-old is fear-inspiring as gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger.

Scary star: Johnny Depp stars as gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger in new poster for film Black Mass released on Wednesday
With Boston's skyline behind him, Johnny stands arms crossed and mustering the best menacing stare he can muster.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean star has completely transformed himself to play the real life murderous gangster.
While concealed by big aviator glasses on the poster, the actor wears ice blue contacts and to ensure he looks even more like convicted felon, he sports motley and freckly skin a receding hairline and thin grey locks slicked back.

Usual look: The 52-year-old (seen here with wife Amber Heard in April) usually has lots of dark brown hair but in the film sports thin white locks with a receding hairline
The stone-faced gangster was one of the most feared and, in some areas, the most loved criminals of his time.
Originally in cahoots with the FBI who looked the other way to the Irish-American gangster's crimes in exchange for information against the Italian-American Mafia, Whitey is believed to have committed numerous murders during the Seventies and Eighties.
He then disappeared only to be found in California decades later and finally found guilty of 11 murders in 2013.

Not getting out alive: The real life 85-year-old criminal is currently serving two life terms in Florida (pictured upon his capture in 2011)

The same day the poster was released, Bulger's real life FBI handler John Connolly lost his appeal and had his 40 year sentence for his role in a murder committed by the gangster reinstated.
The agent (played by Joel Edgerton in the film) was sentenced for jail for providing information the gangster used to carry out the 1982 hit of a sports betting boss, John Callahan.

On screen love: Dakota Johnson plays Bulger's baby-mama Lindsey Cyr in the drama
Black Mass also stars Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch as Jimmy's younger brother William, who was the President of the Massachusetts Senate for 18 years.
And a talented cast which include Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Sienna Miller, Rory Cochrane, and Corey Stoll.
Crazy heart director Scott Cooper heads the Warner Bros. drama, which is based on the 2001 book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill.
Scott said that Johnny nailed the scary role in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly.

'He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra - you never knew where he could strike.
'A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately. They got chills at [Johnny’s] resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him. It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that. He is truly gifted.'
Black Mass is in theatres in the US September 18 and UK theatres on November 13.
