With his radio program, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, syndicated in over 80 markets, many Americans are familiar with Elvis Duran's voice.

But, what many listeners might not be aware of is that, for a number of years, Elvis was seriously overweight and worried about his health. So, with help from celebrity medical expert Dr. Oz, the 50-year-old underwent gastric bypass surgery late last year - and has since managed to lose a whopping 100lbs.

Now, the radio personality is opening up about his weight loss to People, explaining the surgery process, the way Dr. Oz got involved, and how he's feeling a lot healthier these days.

Elvis has hosted his eponymous morning show - which originally aired in New York City as Z100's Z Morning Zoo - for over 20 years.

And while he has said that he's always been 'chubby', it wasn't until he moved from from New York City to New Jersey that he really began gaining weight and his size and health started to seem like a real problem.

'Dieting just didn't work for me anymore,' he explained one day on his show. 'I always just went back to this certain weight.'

Then one morning, while Dr. Mehmet Oz was an on-air guest, he took Elvis's blood pressure.

'He had this look on his face, and he didn't say anything on air,' Duran told People. 'He came up to me [off-air] and said, "I think you should go to the hospital."'

Dr. Oz made a comparison that struck a chord with him, which he later repeated when he returned to the show, saying: 'If you're 100 pounds overweight and age 50, you have the same chance of dying as if you have cancer. If you would be willing to have surgery for cancer, would you be willing to have surgery to rid yourself of being overweight? It's not a cop-out.'

Elvis had already been considering making a major change and tackling his weight because he wanted to live a longer, more fulfilling life.

'I weighed way too much. I was overweight beyond what I wanted to be,' he explained one morning after his surgery, while Dr. Oz was visiting the show again. 'I've always been a little chubby, and I'm OK with that, but it was to the point now where my clothes didn't fit, I was tired of just not feeling good... I wanted to take better care of myself. I wanted to walk around Manhattan without running out of oxygen. I wanted to see my penis again!'

Dr. Oz introduced him to Dr. Bessler at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, and together the three decided that getting a gastric sleeve was the best option.

So in December of 2014, Elvis went on a 'vacation', during which time he underwent the surgery that involved removing 80 to 85 per cent of his stomach - meaning that physically, he would no longer be able to eat the same quantities as before. Still, he insisted to People, it wasn't 'the easy way out'. In actually involved a lot of hospital visits, and continuing to be mindful about his food intake.

'For some people, it's just hard,' Dr. Oz explained. 'It doesn't take away the need to be thoughtful... but now you have the crutch required to lose the weight.'

And he has. Elvis is now 100lbs lighter and says: 'I consider myself the luckiest man alive, and now I'm gonna live longer because of this.'

He explained to People that he gets full much more quickly now, and is struggling to find clothes that fit: 'My a** is saggy in the jeans now.'

But the rewards have been huge - including earning compliments from some very big names in music. In February, Elvis debuted the beginnings of his weight loss as the Grammy Awards, shocking stars who know him from visiting his show over the years.

'Sam Smith and Lady Gaga were like, "Look at you!"' he said. 'And I'm like, "No, this is your night, let's talk about you." It was great.'
