Jessica Alba fails to raise a smile as she steps out amid claims that her organic beauty company's sunscreen is 'useless' and leaves people with painful sunburn

  • Jessica, 34, is facing a bitter backlash online from people who claim to have used the Honest Company's sunscreen and have still burned
  • Many of the people criticizing the products say they have used it on their children, who have then suffered painful sunburn
  • The mother-of-two, who was photographed looking glum while walking around Santa Monica on Thursday, has yet to answer the allegations
  • Jessica recently expanded her Honest Company line, with a new range of tampons and other feminine hygiene products

Actress-turned-entrepreneur Jessica Alba was spotted in Santa Monica, California, on Thursday looking down in the dumps amid a bitter online backlash from customers of her organic beauty brand the Honest Company, who claim the brand's sunscreen is 'useless' and has left them with burns.

Shoppers who have used her sunscreen are claiming that despite liberally applying the SPF formula, they are still left with vicious red burns - and that's after they get past the 'greasy', 'gunky' formula.

Jessica, 34, has yet to answer the allegations, many of which have even included photographic evidence of burns that customers developed after slathering on the SPF.

'Don't buy @Honest sunscreen unless u want to look like this,' wrote one irate mother on Twitter, posting a photo of herself with an angry red burn across her chest and arms. 'Second time I've tried this stuff and got fried. [sic]'

Some people even made clear that they'd used the product as directed, applying liberally and often, but still saw the same lack of results.

'I got sunburnt and I was outside with organic honest company sunscreen on for less than an hour [sic],' wrote one man, while another woman added: 'No offense to @Honest, but I will NEVER use your sunscreen again!! After applying it LIBERALLY every hr, my baby girl is burnt!! Not happy!!'

Others didn't complain about the efficacy of the sunblock but rather how it felt on their skin, noting that it was 'greasy and icky' and 'turned to a layer of gunk' that wouldn't come off in the shower.

Jessica, meanwhile, was seen heading into her Honest Company offices today, possibly to do some damage control.

The mother-of-two wore a tea-length pleated skirt, white tank, chunky chain necklace and navy cross-body bag and paparazzi snapped her on the street.

The complaints have been earning notice just as the actress has been expanding her business. Under the Honest brand, Jessica has also just launched a line of 'healthier and safer' organic pads and tampons.

'The products are going in and around the most vulnerable part of a woman's body,' Jessica told Cosmopolitan. 'I wanted to give people a real, viable alternative, but something that's also good for the planet and good for her.'

The new products, which include normal, plus and super plus pads, tampons and thong liners, are made from 100 per cent GOTS certified organic cotton and made without all the regular synthetics such as rayon and is fragrance and chemical processing free. The tampons even come with a bio-plastic applicator.

'There's lots of insane things that you cannot pronounce that are in a lot of products and we chose to not put them in ours,' she explained.

Taking charge: Jessica founded the Honest Company back in 2011 after having trouble finding parenting products for the 'modern person'

They also come in 'super cute' packaging, which Jessica compared to that of 'an artisanal chocolate or an expensive candle.'

Currently, Jessica's products are carried in the likes of Target, Costco and Nordstrom, and the new products will be priced at $5.95 for pads and no-applicator tampons, and $6.95 for applicator tampons.

The Sin City star founded Honest Company with chief executive officer Brian Lee, chief operating officer Sean Kane and chief product officer Christopher Gavigan in 2011 after finding that existing products in the market did not meet the needs of the 'modern person'.

Although the company started with producing natural and eco-friendly baby products, the brand has since expanded into children's clothes, accessories and more as well as moving into the European and Chinese markets.

On top of her business ventures, the busy mom also has no less than three films out next year, including The Veil, Dear Eleanor and Mechanic: Resurrection.
