'It was the rudest, meanest article and it was a lie': Eva Longoria demands newspaper 'apologise' for claiming she 'pretended' to need glasses for Specsavers campaign

She arrived Down Under in a blaze of Specsavers glory, fronting the optical retail chain's campaign for the smartest glasses wearer.

But despite Eva Longoria wearing glasses as the style ambassador and judge for the 2015 Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year hunt, a Sydney newspaper accused her of 'pretending' to need spectacles to market herself and the brand.

The Desperate Housewives' star, 40, told Thursday's Kyle and Jackie O show of the Sydney Morning Herald claims: ' It wasn't very nice and they have yet to apologise. My feelings were hurt.'

The furious American actress added: 'And it's wrong! I mean how hard is it to get my [glasses] prescription?

'I was really upset because I never endorse anything that I don't authentically believe in. I'm very selective.

She added: 'It was the rudest, meanest article and it was a lie.'

The reality star last week launched a furious broadside against the SMH which had singled her out for sporting a pair of thick rimmed specs to a promotional event at the Hotel Centennial in Woollahra.

The publication claimed Eva – whose previous marketing endeavours include an ambassadorial role for DINE cat food, insisting she did not own a cat – was a ‘serial offender when it comes to selling out in a not so subtle way.’

The diminutive brunette refuted those claims, too, telling Jackie O' Henderson: 'I have owned a cat my entire life.'

She has also taken to social media to hit back at the newspaper's claims by sharing three spliced images showing her sporting spectacles at a variety of events.

Accompanying the shots with a lengthy response, Eva claimed she has needed eye-wear since May 2013, when she suffered from ‘blurred vision’ while studying for a Master’s Degree.

She wrote: 'I went in for an eye test (again on May 3, 2013) and the optometrist said I needed reading glasses and gave me a prescription from which I bought 5 pairs of glasses (again in 2013 and available for you to see).

'The reason your lazy journalist research of "googling" didn't turn up more pictures of me on the "red carpet" is because I don't need glasses to see far, only to READ.'

Rounding off her response to the reporter who wrote the article, she added: 'So next time you want to write an article calling someone "shameful" why don't you do your research because that is your responsibility as a "journalist" and the Sydney Morning Herald should hold you to that "high" standard even though you are just the Lifestyle journalist.

'It sounds like maybe you need some glasses yourself. In that case @SpecsaversAustralia has some awesome, stylish glasses available! I recommend the Collette Dinnigan collection!'

Posting a shot of a blank web-page, she wrote: 'Thanks to the @theinquisitr for taking down the article from @smh by @jennamclarke because it was false.

'If only Sydney Morning Herald had the same class to even return our calls to apologize for their mistake! #ThoughtUWereAllToughPrintingIt #NowYouveGoneSilent.'
