It was one of the moist brutal and public splits in celebrity history, but it seems all that is now murky water under the bridge.

Setting the standard for forgive and forget, Maria Shriver joined Arnold Schwarzenegger to celebrate his birthday in Beverly Hills, California, on Thursday.

The exes looked far from estranged as they arrived at the fancy Montage Hotel to mark the action star's 68th birthday.

The former couple were joined by Arnie's children - Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher - for celebratory lunch.

Not joining them it appeared was the Terminator's girlfriend Heather Milligan or Arnie's love child Joseph Baena.

It was revelations that the movie star had fathered Joseph with the family's housekeeper that led to the split between the actor and Maria.

Perhaps trying to remind himself he is 68-years-young rather than 68-years-old, before lunch the action star managed to fit in a workout, a bike ride and motorcycle ride.

Happy to still be pumping iron, the birthday boy posted a video on Twitter to let his fans know how he was marking the day.

In the video he said: 'Thank you everybody for all the birthday wishes, thank you for the emails, calling me, writing me and all those kind of things

And that was by maintaining a friendship with his ex: 'It has worked out really so well with the help of Maria.'

Talking about what she does for him and his family, the Terminator star revealed how when he was promoting the new film in Germany she organised a surprise for him.

While he said four children he later corrected himself and said his son Joseph was also involved - and he too is a great kid.

'He's terrific and he totally understands the situation. So, it all has worked out... It's a very tough situation for him. It's a very tough situation for my kids. Very tough situation for my family. It was tough for everybody. But it has happened and now we have to figure it out, right?'
