Antonio Banderas transforms into a dirt-covered gold miner struggling for survival in Chilean disaster movie The 33

It was the 2010 rescue mission that captivated the world when 33 Chilean workers became trapped in a mine for 69 days.

And the story hits the big screen this fall with Antonio Banderas transforming into one of the miners, to portray their struggle to survive 200 storeys beneath the earth's surface.

In the first trailer for suspense-filled The 33, the 54-year-old star can be seen covered in sweat and dirt as he delivers the line: 'That’s not a rock, that’s the heart of the mountain. She finally broke'

Shrouded in darkness, the workers survey the giant boulder - the size of two Empire State Buildings - standing in the way of their freedom.

Antonio plays Mario Sepulveda - a miner who becomes trapped on the eve of his retirement. 

Based on the true events of August 2010, the 33 men endured 100 degrees fahrenheit temperatures with little food and water in the San Jose copper and gold mine.

The movie also chronicles the heroic and complex rescue efforts involved to retrieve the men stuck as friends and families await news about the men.

There was no word from the miners for 17 days and they had to ration their three days of emergency food while keeping their spirits up in the face of apparent hopelessness.

Once rescuers and the world realised the men were still alive, the mission became a global event and was watched by over 1 billion people worldwide  

The men were eventually freed on October 13 2010. 

The drama stars an ensemble cast including Juliette Binoche, Mario Casas, Lou Diamn Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Gabriel Byrne and James Brolin.

Producer Mike Medavoy lived in Chile for 10 years and cooperated with the miners, their families and rescue teams to develop the movie which was shot in working mines in Colombia and Chile.

Antonio wondered what direction the movie would take when he was first asked to be involved.

'We all know the beginning and we know the end of this story,' he explained to USA Today.

'What I discovered was another story, one not told. It's the story we tried to do here. We tried to put a magnifying glass on human behavior that comes out in situations like this, when death is right in front of you.'

The Spanish actor didn't mind the physical toll the movie shoot took as he said 'When I saw in the mirror that my tummy was very reduced and the bags really growing under my eyes, I thought that I could pull this off.'

The film hits movie theatres November 13.
