PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Charlize Theron and Sean Penn look tense as they film reshoots for The Last Face in South Africa... two months after she called off engagement

It's been about two months since Charlize Theron ended her engagement to Sean Penn by reportedly 'ghosting' him.

But if she thought she could disappear from his life completely, she was wrong as, rather awkwardly, the former couple found themselves working together in Cape Town, South Africa on Wednesday.

The pair, who had been friends for over 20 years before they started dating, were filming reshoots on 54-year-old director Sean's movie The Last Face which Charlize, 39, stars in.

And it did not look as if either were too happy to see each other, with things looking rather tense on set.

Charlize had a face like thunder as she arrived on set, dressed in character as the director of an international aid organisation in Liberia who makes her world more complicated by falling in love with a relief doctor (Javier Bardem).

But as conflict rages around them, the two quickly become at odds and their relationship falls apart due to their differing views on how to solve the crisis.

Sean didn't look much happier and both look tense whenever they were near each other.

He was spotted puffing on a cigarette at one stage as they pair walked away from each other in opposite directions.

And it's not surprising things were awkward as Charlize is reported to have ended the relationship by 'ghosting' Sean, aka disappearing from his life without a word.

A source told Us Weekly:'Charlize wasn't responding to his calls and texts. She just cut it off.'

The split was surprising as the pair had appeared deeply in love until the sudden break-up.

Charlize attended the Cannes Film Festival in mid May to promote her film Mad Max: Fury Road and looked happy with Sean by her side on May 14 at the premiere of her blockbuster.

The couple were pictured together two days later in Vienna at the Life Ball. At one point he had his arm around her during the event. Soon afterwards, the relationship was over.

While it is claimed that cracks first started to appear in Sean and Charlize's romance shortly after they returned to Los Angeles from filming their upcoming movie, his daughter Dylan insists the film is 'a masterpiece.'

She told UsMagazine.com: 'He just went back to South Africa [to do] reshoots for his movie that he did a couple months back. His life is this movie. I've seen pieces of it, and it's a masterpiece.'

Dylan also insisted that she is on very good terms with Charlize, even though the 'Mad Max: Fury Road' star ended her relationship with Sean in May.

Asked about the Oscar-winning beauty, the 24-year-old model said: 'She's the best. She's hilarious. She's very bold, in the best way.'

Dylan, who is Sean's daughter with ex-wife Robin Wright, previously praised Charlize for being 'the only woman since my mom who can shut my dad up.'

Charlize and Sean have known each other for decades, but only went public with their romance in December 2013.

A year into their relationship, Us reported they had gotten secretly engaged during a trip to Paris. An engagement ring was never seen, however, and the two never confirmed the reports.

Sean was married to Madonna, 56, from 1985 to 1989. In 2010 he divorced Robin Wright, 49, after 14 years of marriage. She is now engaged to Ben Foster.

Meanwhile, the blonde's exes include Craig Bierko and Stuart Townsend.

In March the Dead Man Walking star told Esquire UK, 'You say I've been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today,' he said.

'So I wouldn't even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, "Without tradition, new things die." And I don’t want new things to die.'

He also said he was 'surprised to be in love' with the Monster star.
