UK VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Tom Cruise jumps on to the wing of a moving plane and clings to the side as it takes off in thrilling new Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation clip

Tom Cruise admitted to being 'scared s**tless while filming a stunt in which he clung to the side of an aircraft as it took off at around 160mph.

And now MailOnline has exclusively obtained the first clip from Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation showing Tom in action during that terrifying ride.

The excerpt from the movie shows Tom and his team - including Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg - rushing to get a mysterious package off a plane before it takes off.

When they realise that they are not going to be able to do so, Tom's character Ethan Hunt jumps on to the wing of the aircraft as it taxis on the runway.

While he believed Simon's character could open the plane door remotely and get him inside, instead viewers see him clinging to the side of the plane as it begins to soar and shouting 'You can open the door.'

Earlier this month a behind the scenes clip of filming the incredible scene was released, along with action man Tom revealing his thoughts on the stunt.

‘Why hang a multimillion dollar star on the outside of an aeroplane and fly around in the normal world?' Stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood asks in the clip. ‘But Tom wanted to be on the outside of that plane.’

‘I couldn't sleep the night before,’ the 53-year-old himself reveals. ‘And then came the day. I was like "OK, this is really going to happen".'

While actors doing their own stunts is nothing new, it usually involves a lot of camera tricks, editing, safety gear, and a lot less peril for the movie star.

But when the camera starts rolling in the stomach lurching clip, the only difference between what Ethan Hunt is doing and Tom Cruise is doing is a very thin looking cable.

‘If something went wrong, I can't get into the aeroplane til we land,’ he points out in a voiceover.

As the A400m Atlas military transport accelerates to takeoff speed frighteningly fast, the wind whips at Cruise as he clings to the door for dear life.

'The aircraft tilts upwards and leaves the runway behind, with the sheer velocity now keeping him completely horizontal.

‘I’m feeling the force of the wind hit me. I'm actually scared s**tless,’ he admits.

Eastwood morbidly points out that if they encounter a problem, ‘There's no little crash and a splash; you're dead’.

And what’s even more impressive is he didn’t just do it once, either.

‘I kind of thought that was a one take... but he did it eight times,’ visual effects supervisor David Vickery revealed.

Luckily Tom isn’t superstitious – as the readouts on the camera show, the scary stunt was shot on Halloween last year.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is in cinemas & IMAX from July 30.
