From Thor to thin! Chris Hemsworth reveals he went on a strict 500 calorie a day diet to slim down for epic action flick In The Heart Of The Sea

But Chris Hemsworth's steel resolve was put to the test in a different way for his latest role in action flick In The Heart Of The Sea.
The Australian heartthrob was restricted to a miserly 500 calories a day diet while filming the Ron Howard epic, which sees him take on an 85ft vengeful whale with a single spear.

Who's that guy? Chris Hemsworth, pictured left on the set of The Heart Of The Sea, has revealed he stuck to a 500 calories a day diet while filming the movie in an effort to slim down. Seen right bulked up as Thor
'We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5,6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery,' the 31-year-old told Entertainment Tonight.
The average amount of calories recommended for a man per day depends on his size and activity levels, but it's somewhere between 2000-3000.
People's Sexiest Man Alive 2015 said there was only one thing on his mind during filming.

'All the bad stuff pizzas, hamburgers, chocolate, ice cream... anything that is not on the menu you have an absolute obsession with,' Chris has a craving for the naughty stuff

In December Rush director and Academy Award winner Howard shared a snap of the blonde haired heartthrob on set, revealing his much maligned frame.
Far from the thundering muscular prowess of Thor the athletic actor looked positively waif-like revealing his slimmed down frame in a blue vest and shirt; the weight fallen from his face.

Thor whatta a man! The Byron Bay living star is better known for playing thundering demi-God Thor
In November Hemsworth spoke of his sailing fodder on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Far from the Australian diet of barbecues he was raised on the Byron Bay based star revealed, 'It ends up being a couple of small salads and a couple small small pieces of protein.
'And that's kind of it, and you go to bed hungry. And then you have a fasting period of 15 hours and then you have little meals through the day.'
While he might not have been packing on the blubber for the high concept blockbuster, he was certainly burning calories during filming.

Charting the true story of the maritime tale that later became the inspiration for Melville's classic novel Moby Dick, the story descends into a tale of survival as the men are left shipwrecked and stranded for 90 days, thousands of miles from home in South America.
