EXFOLIATE LIPS

If flaky skin is ruining the finish of your lipstick, make sure you exfoliate first.

Apply a liberal amount of Vaseline and allow it to sink it for five minutes.

Then using a clean mascara wand gently scrape the lips to lift any problem areas.

Alternatively, use the damp corner of a towel and rub in small circles to create a smooth canvas for your lipstick.

MAKE LIPS LOOK BIGGER

To give lips a fuller more puckered look, start at the inside of mouth and follow the natural outward lines of the lip with lip liner.

Draw about four of these vertical lines on bottom lip and four lines on the top, then using a lip stain to fill in the rest of the area, gently smudged the lines.

These subtle blended lines will make the lips appear more pursed and dramatic.

DEFINE LIPS WITH CONCEALER

For a perfectly-defined pout, use concealer to clean up any smudged edges.

Concealer can also be used to neaten up areas like the cupid's bow, and even subtly lining the edges of the outer mouth can really serve to make the colour stand out against the skin.

MAKE IT LAST LONGER

To give any lipstick that much-needed staying power, hold a thin tissue over your made-up mouth and dust translucent powder over the area with a fat, fluffy brush.

A small amount of powder will transfer through the fibres of the tissue and work to lock in any moisture and mattify the colour.

USE CONTOURING

A slightly lighter shade on the inner part of the lips will create the illusion of fullness.

Use one shade all over the entirety of the lips, before sectioning the middle area of both the top and bottom lip for a slightly lighter shade.

Blend the edges for an intense looking pout.

CLEAR LINER

For those with shaky hands, clear lip liner could be the perfect way to give your mouth the perfect finish - and without the fear of erratic smudges.

After applying colour, use a clear lip pencil to line just outside the boundaries of your desired pout.

This will ensure the colour doesn't bleed out of the line.

AN OPAQUE POUT

Fussy about your lipstick shade? If you're looking to achieve exactly the same colour on the tube, make sure you pat a thin coat of foundation over the lip area first.

Already existing pigments of pinks and purples in the lips can often change the intensity or shade of lipstick.

Neutralise the area with foundation or concealer for the perfect intense colour.

FIX BROKEN LIPSTICK

For those who are mourning the death of their limited edition lipsticks, broken bullets can be fixed by taking a lighter to the product.

Use the heat to melt the ends of the broken bullet, and use your fingers to gently push them together and smudge over the cracks.

Not quite good as new - but certainly salvageable.

MATTIFY LIPSTICK

Bought the perfect shade of lipstick, but not a fan of the wet lacquered look? Use eye shadow to take it down a notch.

Find an eye shadow in a similar shade to your lip colour and after applying a coat, blot and give your lips a light dusting.

This will not only instantly mattify the product, but will also give lips a multi-tonal sheen.

PERFECT CUPID'S BOW

Start at the the highest point of the lips and draw a diagonal line extending down from that point.

Repeat on the other side, so there is a visible 'X'. Fill in the rest of the lips with your colour of choice.

This will create the illusion of a strong cupid's bow and the perfect feminine pout.
