Like Wonder Woman herself, Trevor's backstory has seen many reboots in the heroine's history; but in the original 1941 comic he is an intelligence officer and pilot in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

His plane crash lands on Paradise Island, homeland of the Amazons, where he is nursed back to health by princess Diana (not that one). She subsequently falls in love with him and accompanies him back to the outside world, taking on the alter ego of Diana Prince.

Throughout the decades, Trevor's has meandered from able-bodied hero who fights alongside Wonder Woman to a 'gentleman-in-jeopardy' who needs rescuing all the time.

While details on the new film version are scant, it is understood Chris will be getting his hands dirty and will be involved in plenty of the action.

The casting news appears to have put paid to the online rumour that Pine was in line to play Hal Jordan in the new Green Lantern reboot.

It is as yet unknown if Pine's Trevor will make an appearance in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

That Zack Snyder film will mark Gal Gadot's debut as Wonder Woman, before she finally gets her own film in 2017.

Despite being considered one of DC's 'big three', Wonder Woman has had to sit on the sidelines and watch Batman and Superman get a dozen big screen outings between them before a female superhero finally got to break out - and not before her soft introduction when the two duke it out next year.

Pine is currently preparing to return as Captain James T Kirk for the third time in Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond.
