Xena: Warrior Princess stars Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor reunite after refuting reboot rumours

Lucy Lawless may have denied rumours of a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, but she was happy to stage a reunion in the same week.

The 47-year-old actress posted a photo on Wednesday that showed Lucy and her Xena co-star, Renee O'Connor, 44, smiling together.

'Still hanging with my gal #Reneeoconnor,' Lucy wrote in a caption certain to set the show's still-devoted fan base ablaze.

Originally running for six seasons between 1995 and 2001, Xena: Warrior Princess was one of the most successful syndicated series of all time.

Stars Lucy - who played the title character - and Renee - who was Xena's faithful friend, Gabrielle - have reportedly remained close in the intervening years.

The Hollywood Reporter announced on July 20 that NBC Universal was in the early stages of planning a Xena reboot for 2016.

According to the report, the show's original executive producers, Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, were involved, while Lucy was wanted for a role on-screen and in production.

The show's heroine was expected to be a 'sophisticated and smart' young woman along the lines of The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen.

These reports, however, may have been somewhat premature, as Lucy herself insisted in a tweet posted on the same day.

'Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage,' she wrote.

Earlier in the month, Lucy had made it clear in interviews just how much she would be interested in tackling Xena again.

'It would still be cool to do it again with Renee [O'Connor], me, Ted [Raimi], and Bruce [Campbell]. It'd be a fun little gig,' the actress told Den of Geek when asked about a new Xena series during the San Diego Comic-Con.

She was not even concerned about the fact that her character had been killed in the show's series finale.

'So what? Technicality!' Lucy joked. 'No one really dies!'

'Screw her head back on, it's a bit wonky, and she's got a really bad attitude since she's been in a box for 20 years, so they've got to get Xena's mojo back, and go and save the world somehow.'

New work: Lucy will next be seen in the horror-movie spinoff series, Ash Vs. The Evil Dead, airing on Starz starting in October

Whether or not Xena ever returns, Lucy will soon be on television again, co-starring with Bruce Campbell in Starz's Evil Dead spinoff, Ash Vs. The Evil Dead.

Set to premiere on October 31, the new show will reunite Lucy with her Xena executive producers - who were also the original Evil Dead producers - and at least one co-star.

Based on the recent reunion photo, a guest-starring role for Renee would not be impossible.

Ongoing interest: While she did refute the most recent Xena rumours, Lucy did say at Comic-Con that she would love to one day play the Warrior Princess role again
