Hats the way to do it! Glamorous women don supersized headgear as ladies' day gets underway at Glorious Goodwood (but some racegoers get caught out by the breeze)
- Day three of the famous race meeting dawned sunny and bright in Chichester on Thursday
- Lucy James and Imogen Haisman were caught out by a huge gust of wind that took off with their hats
- Like its Berkshire counterpart, Goodwood also operates a strict dress code
From trendy black fedoras to huge sprays of peacock feathers, the hats worn by racegoers arriving for the third day of racing at Glorious Goodwood were elaborate enough to distract from the horse racing itself.
Day three of the famous race meeting dawned sunny and bright - but the strong breeze caught a few well-dressed racegoers by surprise.
Two well turned-out women dressed in contrasting white and black dresses were caught by surprise when a huge gust of wind nearly sent their hats flying into the Chichester hills.
Lucy James and Imogen Haisman were happily posing for a photographer when a sudden breeze blew in, wreaking havoc with their meticulously planned outfits.
Easy breezy: Glamorous women donned supersized headgear as ladies' day got underway at Glorious Goodwood on a sunny Thursday (but some racegoers, like these two women, got caught out by the breeze)
Other women at The Magnolia Cup held at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester, plumped for more classic headwear with wide-brimmed hats in elegant pastel and caramel hues proving particularly popular, as did heavily feathered options.
Princess Eugenie also put in an appearance on the sunny Wednesday afternoon and presented Camilla Henderson with the trophy after the female jockey won The Magnolia Cup Goodwood Ladies' Race.
Although not quite hitting the sartorial heights of Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, which this year raises money for Amref Health Africa, is catching up in the fashion stakes as more and more racegoers take the opportunity to dress up for the occasion.
Like its Berkshire counterpart, Goodwood also operates a strict dress code that outlaws jeans and shorts and insists that guests keep their shoulders covered and eschew fancy dress.
Instead, the style guide suggests 'jackets and either ties, cravats or polo neck sweaters' for gentlemen and 'smart casual' for ladies, adding that 'due to the terrain and areas of decking at Goodwood, flat shoes are recommended'.
Racegoers certainly appeared to be taking those strictures to heart, with no sign of the wacky hats, skintight frocks and skyscraper heels that characterise other meets, most notably Aintree, although some did brave a day out in high heels.

Jockeys riding at the Qatar Goodwood Festival will wear black armbands in memory of legendary commentator Sir Peter O'Sullevan, who died peacefully at his home in London yesterday aged 97.
To celebrate his long and distinguished career, racegoers at Goodwood are invited to applaud after the runners have made their way to post for the opening Land Rover Handicap at 2.05pm.
Born on March 3, 1918, Sir Peter was the BBC's leading commentator for 50 years and became known as the 'Voice of Racing'. He was awarded an OBE for services to racing in 1976 and received his knighthood in 1997.
Upon his retirement in November, 1997, he established the Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust which has distributed over £4 million to six welfare organisations; Blue Cross, Brooke Hospital for Animals, Compassion in World Farming, International League for the Protection of Horses, Racing Welfare and the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.
He had strong connections to Goodwood, visiting the course throughout his life and opening the Sussex Stand in 1990.
Speaking about the day's race, Seamus Buckley, Goodwood's Clerk of the Course, said at 9.45am: 'I'm continuing to call the going Good as there is still plenty of moisture in the ground.
'Today's GoingStick reading is 7.5 as against 7.2 yesterday morning indicating drying conditions. The going seems consistent across the course in the straight, with the stands' side having a GoingStick reading of 7.1 and the far side 7.2.
'We have taken down the dolled-out rails on the far side of the course in the straight to provide a strip of fresh ground about seven yards wide today.
'We will review the ground conditions after racing to see if any watering is necessary. The forecast is for the weather to remain dry and we might do some selective watering on the round course.'
Style set: Other women at The Cup held at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester, plumped for more classic headwear with wide-brimmed hats in elegant pastel and caramel hues proving particularly popular, as did heavily feathered options
