'I find her admirable': Author John Green explains why supermodel Cara Delevingne was right to respond the way she did in that 'awkward' interview

  • Model Cara Delevingne has faced backlash following 'awkward' interview
  • Answered question about if she had read 'Paper Towns' with sarcastic quip
  • Anchors cut short the interview and suggested she 'take a nap'
  • John Green defended her, saying she was not 'haughty' but 'admirable'

Author John Green has defended Cara Delevingne after she caused uproar on social media with an ‘awkward’ interview promoting her new film.

Ms Delevingne stars in the film adaptation of John Green’s latest novel Paper Towns, and was being interviewed as part of the whirlwind publicity tour.

But the 22-year-old was slammed by TV anchors on breakfast show Good Day Sacramento, following the now-infamous interview which aired this month.

After introducing the model-turned-actress as ‘Carla’, the interview went from bad to worse as the interviewers proceeded to ask Cara whether she had read the book.

'Uh, no I never read the book, or the script. I kind of winged it,' she quipped, before giving her actual answer to their question.

After the three-minute interview, the anchors accused her of being in a 'bad mood' and suggested she 'take a nap'.

Indianapolis author John Green has now published an article on blogsite Medium.com, entitled ‘But Did You Read the Book? Cara Delevingne, Press Junketry and Me’.

‘I watched as again and again, she was asked this question,’ he writes.

‘Cara has read the book (multiple times), but the question is annoying – not least because her male co-star, Nat Wolff, was almost always asked when he’d read the book, while Cara was almost always asked if she’d read it.’

He goes on to describe the grueling nature of publicity tours, and how most of the team get through the hundreds of interviews by turning themselves into ‘automatons’ and reverting to a series of scripted answers.

Be the talk of the town in a metallic dress like Cara

After working the runway for Burberry, Lanvin, Chanel and Saint Laurent, it's no surprise that Cara Delevingne can work the red carpet like a master!

She stunned at the New York premier of Paper Towns donning a silver slashed wrap dress and metallic sandals.

Not only is the slashed dress beautifully textured but we appreciate her temerity in pairing silver with silver.

Who is this gorgeous dress by you ask? Saint Laurent is the mastermind behind the piece and it's no surprise since the designer has created multiple metallic pieces in the past.

As much as we love the dress, it is unavailable. The good news is you can shop Saint Laurent's ready to wear collection at Net-a-Porter.

Don't forget to take a look at our style carousel below for some smokin' gunmetal options. Our favorite pick is the Rachel Zoe long-sleeve dress from Shopbop!

‘In the end, rather than fight, I stuck to the script.

‘Cara, however, refuses to stick to the script. She refuses to indulge lazy questions and refuses to turn herself into an automaton to get through long days of junketry.

‘I don’t find that behavior entitled or haughty. I find it admirable. Cara Delevingne doesn’t exist to feed your narrative or your news feed – and that’s precisely why she’s so f***ing interesting.’

He explained his motivation for writing the article, noting: ‘If people are going to pay attention to these junket interviews and criticize Cara for responding flippantly to a stupid question, I think context might be helpful.’

Cara has already fired back at the breakfast show anchors, insisting that she was not ‘in a mood’, as the anchors claimed after the on-air chat.

She tweeted: ‘Some people just don’t understand sarcasm or the British sense of humor.’

Several other celebrities have stepped up to defend Cara, criticizing the anchors for their ‘condescending’ questions.

Actor and director Zach Braff, replied to Cara’s tweet: ‘Or how it’s condescending to ask an actress if she’s read the book.’
