Star Wars director J.J. Abrams reveals he broke his back on set... just moments after Harrison Ford broke his ankle

J.J. Abrams has revealed he broke his back while making Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The 49-year-old director and producer revealed that rather painful incident while a guest on Thursday night's episode of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.

Jon Stewart, 52, prompted the story when he asked about Harrison Ford's rather impressive ability to handle injuries.

Harrison, 73, broke his ankle in June 2014 while filming scenes for the new Star Wars movie.

A hydraulic door that was part of the movie's Millennium Falcon set crashed down on the actor, sending him to the hospital and delaying Harrison's filming schedule for approximately two months.

Almost one year later, in March 2015, Harrison broke an ankle again - and fractured his pelvis - when he had to crash-land his private plane in Venice, California.

By the time San Diego Comic-Con rolled around in July, however, Harrison was fully active once again.

'The guy is like a real-life superhero,' J.J. said. 'He should have that little Marvel logo above his name.'

Meanwhile, J.J.'s broken back was a direct result of his star's injury, occurring when the director rushed to help Harrison on-set.

'There was a hydraulic door that went down. He was pushed down, his ankle goes 90 degrees,' J.J. explained of the accident that injured Harrison.

'He's down there and he's toughing it out. He's a super human being! He's literally lying there, telling jokes.'

'Now this door had gone down, and I'm trying to help lift it up. I felt this kind of pop in my back,' J.J. said of the moment he tried to lift the door off Harrison.

When J.J. visited the doctor a few days later, he found out he had fractured his L4 vertebra and had to wear a back brace for the rest of the shoot.

Meanwhile, his actor - who will be reprising his role as Han Solo in the movie - was up for sprinting by August.

'I felt like the most nebbishly Jewish director ever,' J.J. admitted when he saw how quickly Harrison healed.

On the plus side, his back brace may have been a boon to the director's figure: 'It's like Spanx, they kind of keep you all together. I felt like I was on Baywatch!' he joked.

J.J. has since healed and was excited to be a guest on one of Jon Stewart's final shows - the host's Daily Show run ends on August 6 - officially to talk about Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.
