Chris Pratt had fans all in a tizzy on Thursday when he posted a bizarre Instagram post that tenuously hinted he would be joining the cast of a new Ghostbusters movie.

But no sooner had he shared the goat-themed pictorial, had Ivan Reitman - the director of the original 1984 film and producer of the upcoming all-female version - quashed the rumours.

Reitman issued a statement saying 'There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify.

'There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise,'

Pratt, 36, was seemingly fanning the flames of speculation about his involvement in another specter- fighting action flick when he bizarrely shared three photos of goats to Instagram.

The Jurassic World goofball captioned the images with the Ghostbusters theme tune, and wrote alongside the final image 'I ain't fraid 'a no goats'

Rumours of a Ghostbusters remake featuring Pratt and Channing Tatum were first sparked in December after leaked Sony emails made the rounds.

And one of the main sources of insider information this week was writer Drew Pearce - who has long been connected to the project - who told MTV he had completed a script for the new Sony film.

Pearce - who also penned Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - said: 'I've finished my work on that in the last couple weeks,'

Asked about whether Pratt and Tatum were on board, he revealed: 'That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project,

'Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.'

He later clarified on Twitter that no script had been written.

Reitman's statement comes just four months after he confirmed plans for an expanded Ghostbusters 'universe' featuring 'different films, TV shows and merchandise'.

He told Deadline at the time: 'Paul Feig's film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come.

'The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers' next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.'

Tatum, 35, was attached to the new franchise at the same time, with Deadline reporting the 21 Jump Street star would play one of the ghoul-fighting gents in a new male-centric film directed by the Russo brothers.

Anthony and Joe Russo also directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and its next sequel Captain America: Civil War.

At the same time it was revealed that Sony would create a new production company, Ghostcorps, with star and writer of the original movie Dan Aykroyd, 63 and Reitman as principals.

Meanwhile the Paul Feig-directed female version starring his Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, plus Saturday Night Live stars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon is already in production.

The franchise reboots with Feig's version in July next year.
