A stunning Australian surfer couple were on board a boat that capsized off Oahu's north shore in Hawaii on Monday night, helping keep afloat a cute black dog and a young girl until support arrived.

Tyron Swan, who shot to fame after attaching a paraplegic mother to his back while surfing, and his model girlfriend Brinkley Davies, were aboard a small boat when its pumping system failed and it started sinking.

Capsizing 800 metres from the bay, two adults made a swim for shore, leaving the remaining 12 to float with the upturned boat in the dark until US Coastguards came an hour and a half later.

'Tyron and I floated next to the boat while we waited for US Coastguards... it was dark and even though the water was warm everyone was starting to get a bit cold', Brinkley Davies told Daily Mail Australia.

The couple were enjoying a day on the water in their friend's boat, when the bilge pump stopped working, causing the deck to quickly fill with water.

'We threw the life jackets into the water and said 'anyone who's not bailing water needs to get off the boat'', said Mr Swan, according to news.com.au

The boat soon capsized, doubling up as a flotation device for the overboard passengers as they waited to be rescued.

Even the dog was content to sit patiently on a hydrofoil surfboard.

A Coast Guard helicopter flew overhead after the accident was reported by a swimmer who had reached the shore, honing a search light on the capsized boat until a rescue boat arrived.

The South Australian couple said that the little girl on board was a 'trooper' and 'wasn't fazed at all' , handling the frightening situation better than everyone else and staying calm until rescue arrived.

Tyron Swan made headlines when he duct-taped his friend's wheelchair-bound mother Pascale Honore to his back so that she could experience surfing waves.

Ms Honore was left paralysed in a car-accident 20 years ago, and said of the moving experience, 'I remember looking up, the colour, the sound, being part of everything, being part of the water, I can't find words to explain it.'

Mr Swan's girlfriend, Brinkley Davies, is a model and marine conservationist, spending most of her time at the bottom of the ocean free-diving with sharks and deadly sea creatures.

The couple expressed their thankfulness that the incident didn't occur in the shark-infested waters of their hometown, saying, 'if it happened where we're from in South Australia it would have been scary...it was fine over here, the waters warm'.

'Hawaii's a good place to be shipwrecked. Everything's warm and friendly and nothing wants to eat you', Mr Swan said.
