Friday is National Mutts Day - and what better way to mark the occasion than by stripping off and posing for a snap with your pet pooch.

Just ask Lena Dunham - because that's exactly how she put her stamp on it.

The 29-year-old creator and star of Girls shared a snap of herself topless with her 1.9m Instagram followers, cradling her rescue dog Lamby to afford herself some cover.

'We heard a rumor it's #NationalMuttDay,' she wrote in an accompanying caption.

'Skin to skin,' commented one Instagram user, while another added: '#freethenipple.'

There was also some praise for Lena's bold antics: 'Lena if I could like this picture 200 times I would,' chimed in social media user armaanc.

Lena - who is currently filming the fifth season of her HBO show, rescued Lamby from the BARC shelter in Brooklyn in January 2013, fulfilling a childhood dream to own a dog.

A few months later she revealed she had put the pooch on mood stabilizer Prozac - after admitting the the dog was having trouble settling into her home.

National Mutts days started in 2005 and encourages people to adopt mixed breed dogs and offer help at a local animal shelter.

It is observed bi-annually on July 31 and December 2.
