'Winds were light and variable on Friday night. Seas were one to two feet and the skies were clear,' Jeff Nichols of the Department of Marine Resources told WMTW.

'That being said, there were in a canoe, which is a small boat, and things can happen.'

A fisherman spotted Roy Carlile's body floating in Chandler Bay at about 11am on Saturday. His body was entangled in fishing gear near Sandy River Beach, and he was pronounced dead by medical responders.

A cooler was found floating in the bay Saturday afternoon, but Judith Carlile remained missing overnight.

Her body was found in Chandler Bay at about 5.50 Sunday morning off Roque Island, officials say.

Their 13-foot-long green canoe has not been found. According to Marine Patrol, the two own a cabin in Jonesport.

Jolene Harmon, who lives across the road from the Carliles’ oceanfront cabin, said Judith Carlile grew up in Auburn and her parents had left the couple the cabin.

She said Roy Carlile was a military veteran who worked as a school bus dispatcher in Pennsylvania and was looking forward to retiring soon, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Authorities say autopsies will be done to confirm cause of death.
