Needed a date-night? Hillary and Bill enjoy some alone time at U2 concert while daughter Chelsea is wanded by security before partying with Bono's daughter

  • Lead singer Bono praised the couple for their efforts to fight Aids
  • Also gave 'shout out' to Bill for helping to negotiate peace in Ireland
  • Bruce Springsteen was also in audience and played guitar on stage
  • Other guests included Winona Rider and Scarlett Johannsson

On the campaign trail it can often be hard to fit in some one-on-one time with your other half.

So when Bill and Hillary Clinton had a Friday night off together they arranged a date night, and were joined by thousands of music fans.

The political powerhouses watched U2 in their last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden.

They sat on the front row of one of the circle sections and waved to fans who were snapping pictures of the couple on their cell phones.

Their daughter Chelsea was there on her own terms with her husband Marc Mezvinsky and Bono's daughter Eve Hewson. She was pictured being wanded by security as she entered the venue.

Another member of the star-studded crowd, scandal-hit news anchor Brian Williams, decided to keep his visit under wraps.

The embattled journalist who is hoping to revive his reputation for MSNBC, was seen waiting outside of the venue with daughter Allison.

On Friday night, lead singer Bono gave a shout out to 'the 42nd president', Bill Clinton, for helping to negotiate peace in the 1990s in the band's native Ireland.

Bono went on to praise the former president and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton - who is running for president - for their efforts in fighting Aids.

Both Hillary and Bill were at the concert, along with a whole host of celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, Scarlett Johannsson, Winona Ryder and Helena Christensen.

U2 performed for more than two hours, with thousands singing along on such favorites as Pride (In the Name of Love) and Sunday Bloody Sunday.

The Clintons received warm applause, but the biggest cheers came when the band's encore brought an old friend on stage - Bruce Springsteen, who played acoustic guitar and joined them for 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and the Ben E. King hit 'Stand By Me.'

Both the Clintons and Springsteen have close ties with U2. Bono has appeared at events for the Clinton Foundation, while Springsteen helped induct U2 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

He also stepped in for Bono at a show last year when the singer was still recovering from a bicycle accident in Central Park.

The New York shows wrapped up the North American leg of U2's 'Innocence & Experience' tour. The band will play in Europe this fall, starting with two shows in Turin, Italy, in September.
