She's the boss now! Anne Hathaway, 32, steps up to CEO role while Robert De Niro, 71, stars as her unlikely assistant in The Intern

In The Intern, a post-retirement Robert De Niro takes an unusual step to find fulfilment: an internship under Anne Hathaway.

'I just know there's a hole in my life, and I need to fill it. Soon,' the 71-year-old actor's character says at the beginning of the new trailer released on Monday.

Ben Whittaker, an aging businessman, finds his purpose working as an intern in the online fashion company run by 32-year-old Anne's Jules Ostin.

Unlike earlier sneak peeks at the upcoming comedy from Nancy Meyers, the newest trailer begins with Ben's struggle to fill his retirement years.

'In retirement, there's an ongoing, relentless effort in creativity,' Robert says in a voiceover while Ben tries to sleep.

'I tried yoga, learned to cook, bought some plants, took classes in Mandarin - believe me, I've tried everything.'

Although he has at least three decades on everyone else in the office, Ben quickly fits in and becomes a confidante for struggling CEO Jules.

Fortunately for Ben and everyone else, Jules is not a boss-from-hell type - which Anne would know well from her earlier role in 2006's The Devil Wears Prada - despite her high stress levels.

Different kind of boss: Jules is a highly stressed person but is not insane and awful like Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep, left) in Anne's 2006 movie, The Devil Wears Prada

There is no romance between Jules and Ben either, but the older man does provide plenty of relationship advice to a young co-worker (Adam DeVine).

'I assume you talked to her, apologized?' Ben asks after the younger man wonders why his office crush has remained angry with him.

The post-retirement intern is clearly not impressed by his colleague's choice to send an emoji-filled e-mail instead of actually speaking.

Romantic advice: Ben gets along with most of the office, even offering love advice to a co-worker (played by Adam Devine)

Ben gets his own romance as well, thanks to some flirting from Rene Russo's Fiona, the in-office masseuse.

'I love that there's another oldie-but-goodie here,' she says before causing some physical excitement for the intern.

The Intern opens on September 25.
