Get ready for rising interest rates and save THOUSANDS by switching your mortgage now to

More than six years of rock bottom interest rates have brought smiles to the faces of many homeowners who have seen their mortgage repayments come sliding down. But savers, many of them elderly and mortgage free, have witnessed savage rate cuts. With the mood music from the Bank of England suggesting that interest rates could start to climb before the year is up, we look at how borrowers and savers should respond.

It is not often you will hear a banker call for the regulator to intervene more, but Les Matheson is doing just that. For Matheson, who heads the RBS and NatWest bank operations, has declared war on price promotions in banking. He is targeting teasers which offer higher savings rates or lower mortgage costs only to revert to less generous terms after a year or so, and mortgage fees which jack up the cost of a home loan but don't show up in the advertised loan rates. All these, he says, must go.

JEFF PRESTRIDGE: Why it is vital to have your say on pensions this summer

JEFF PRESTRIDGE: Why it is vital to have your say on pensions this summer

Pensions are an essential part of our lives - and they will probably remain so for the foreseeable future despite constant political meddling. But the pensions landscape is changing radically and unless you are prepared to say how you wish the topography to be shaped, it will be determined for you by people (civil servants) who don't necessarily have your best interests at heart. After all, their pensions, like those for Members of Parliament, will remain gold-plated for time immemorial - come hell or high water. Whatever changes are coming our way will make little difference to their future gilded retirements. Damn them.

Rival bank HSBC only pulled out in June with many of its customers transferring their business to Barclays because of its apparent continued support for the community.
