In the promotion film, Colbert says: 'Hi America, it's Stephen Colbert. I can't wait to start hosting the Late Show starting September 8 on CBS.

'I'll talk about the news, tell jokes and have fascinating conversations with celebrities, athletes, musicians and, of course, politicians.'

At that point, Colbert is confronted by Romney and quips 'Wow, you do a great Mitt Romney'.

'I am Mitt Romney', the former Republican leader responds. He then bemoans the lack of pancakes available.

In another promotion video, Colbert shows off his Charlie Rose Trapper Keeper, while doing a card trick in the third teaser.

It has also been reported a new state-of-the-art studio is being constructed at the Ed Sullivan Theater ahead of the show's launch.

An insider told the New York Daily News: 'The entire theatre has been totally gutted. Everything has been stripped down to the bones. The seats have been removed, the carpets are gone. Nothing is left except a concrete floor and exposed concrete walls.

'The historical features have all been sanded down and are being restored. Even the ceiling is being renovated to look like new.

'CBS has stripped out the sound system and is building a brand-new sound. Everything will be brand-new.

'And the rest, the furniture, the look, the seats, will all be new. It will look nothing like "Letterman."'

Colbert, 51, was catapulted to fame after a video of him making a controversial speech at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2006 went viral.

Standing a few yards from then US President George Bush, he mockingly said: 'I stand by this man.

'I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares.

'And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound - with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world.'

He hosted Comedy Central's acclaimed late-night satire programme, The Colbert Report from 2005.

He will replace veteran presenter Letterman, 68, who retired after 21 years of presenting the CBS show and 11 years on NBC's Late Night.
