Demi Lovato is decidedly back on with her on-off boyfriend of five years Wilmer Valderrama, frequently sharing loved-up pictures alongside the From Dusk Till Dawn actor on social media.

However, in the September issue of Cosmopolitan the 22-year-old admitted that she didn't look at the relationship as off-on, because temporary splits had only ever resulted from her struggles with addiction.

'The only times we ever broke up were when I was relapsing, whether it was drugs or in a bad place and rebelling against everybody, not just him...' she shared of her past, which the star is famously open about.

Demi explained: 'People say that relapses happen before you use. Your mind starts setting up the relapse before you take that drink or that first hit.'

'The times we'd broken up, I had already gone to that place of, yeah, this is what's happening. I didn't realize it at the time, but I just wanted to sabotage everything around me so that I could sabotage myself.'

However, Demi gushed that the 35-year-old former That '70s Show star stuck by her side as she worked through it.

'We started dating when I turned 18… Right after that, I went to rehab,' she shared, noting: 'People told him, 'You should probably leave. She's on a spiral, and you're going to be sucked down with it.''

'But he was like, 'I'm not leaving. This is somebody I really care about,'' Demi said of the actor, adding: 'We relate on a lot of levels. I've seen a lot of s***. S*** people don't know about. He's seen a lot of stuff, too.'

And it seems Wilmer's understanding nature goes beyond Demi's difficult past, as the performer revealed he wasn't really the jealous type.

In fact, the actor fits right in alongside Demi's friend - and business partner - Nick Jonas, brother of Joe Jonas, who the former Disney Channel darling dated in 2010.

'Nick and Wilmer get along great - Joe and Wilmer, too,' she said. 'It's weird. In the beginning, I was like, 'Why the f*** are you friends with Joe?' He was like, 'He's a cool guy.' Yeah, I know. I dated him.'

In the candid interview the no-holds-barred hitmaker commented on the music industry, seemingly calling out her fellow artists as being fake as she maintained she is one of the few who actually practices what she preaches.

'There are a lot of girls in pop. They have bada** lyrics, but I feel like I'm the only person other than Rihanna and Nicki Minaj who isn't afraid to say, 'Try something on me and I'll f***ing beat your a**,' she said.

The Cool for the Summer singer added: 'There are people who can dress up and play the part, but their music doesn't say it.'

'My love' The hitmaker shared this snap from the set of her Cool for the Summer video, writing: 'Always supporting me on set... At 4 am even if he has to get up to work at 8..'

Demi looked stunning on the publication's cover, as she flaunted her curves in a plunging, sleeveless crystal jumpsuit.

The raven-haired beauty also showcased her hard-earned figure, turning to the side to face the camera in the shot, giving a glimpse at her toned arms and midriff.

Another shot from the spread showed the artist in a spaghetti strap, white asymmetrical camisole with sheer panels, which also highlighted her toned torso.

The daring top was coupled with a fitted white skirt which hugged the songstress's curves, and coordinated with her white manicure.
