Getting their groove on! Meryl Streep, daughter Mamie Gummer and Rick Springfield line up to promote rock 'n' roll movie Ricki And The Flash

She plays an aging rock 'n' roller who finally returns home to her ex-husband and now grown children in her new movie.

But Meryl Streep looked nothing like her rock chick alter ego Ricki when she turned up for a cast call to promote Ricki And The Flash at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York on Sunday.

The 66-year-old left her tight black jeans, boots and hair extensions on set and looked elegant in a long-sleeved, knee-length dress, nipped in at the waist, in an array of fall colours.

She pulled her blonde hair back into a pony tail that draped over her shoulder and she donned round glasses that gave her the look of a school ma'am.

The Oscar winner was joined by Mamie Gummer, 31, her daughter in the film and in real life, who wore a little black dress, and Rick Springfield, 65.

The Australian Jessie's Girl rocker-turned-actor plays Greg, Meryl's boyfriend and lead guitarist in The Flash, the cover band in the film.

He looked dapper in a black suit jacket over white v-neck sweater, black jeans and black leather shoes. Rick also wore glasses.

In an interview with The Boston Globe published on Saturday Rick revealed that Meryl, ever the consummate actress, actually learned to play the guitar for her role.

'I know professional players who have a difficult time singing and playing [simultaneously]; it was pretty impressive,' he said of his co-star.

And the style of guitar he played when he wrote Jessie's Girl, a Gibson SG, has an important role in the film so he insisted Meryl use his.

Due out on Friday, Ricki And The Flash will be the third movie that Mamie and Meryl have made together.

She was just 20 months old when she appeared with her mother in Heartburn, credited under the name Natalie Stern to avoid press scrutiny.

In 2007, she starred with Meryl in Michael Cunningham's film adaptation of Susan Minot's novel, Evening, playing her mother as a young woman.
